TTRPG thoughts:

Running a homebrew setting can really be such an intimate thing. You’re saying to your friends, here’s this world filled with my own imagination, I want to share it with you and if you’re feeling up to it, come join me and create it with me.

I'm a big fan of Terese and I can't wait to read all the stories in this book. Canlit and Canspec should get right behind this. A speculative anthology filled with Black writers from Canada?

Let's go.
Congratulations to Guelph MFA alum @teresempierre.bsky.social on the release of #ASTHEEARTHDREAMS (House of Anansi), out now!

Edited by Terese Mason Pierre, this groundbreaking anthology of speculative fiction uplifts the spectacular imaginings, reflections, and hopes of Black writers in Canada.

This is of niche industry interest, but here goes:

The digital catalog platform most independent bookstores use to peruse and order new books for their stores (called Edelweiss) has jacked up their prices on publishers to catalog new titles 200-300%.

Why does this matter?

One of the constant strands in the history of the university, dating back to its medieval origins, is the attempt of authorities - especially religious authorities but not exclusively - to control what can and cannot be taught.

By the way, you can in fact run a media business where people give you money for goods and services. 56k+ people give The Onion ~$100 and we give them a year of newspapers. This business didn’t exist last year in this way. People will pay for good shit. Now’s the time to break glass and go for it.

It’s funny because promoting and marketing a book in any way, shape, or form is actually NOT the author’s job. At all. It is unpaid labor we’ve been forced to do for so long the expectation has mutated like a virus into “okay now you also have to be a TikTok sensation to do this as a job.”
I just don’t want “film a video and hope it goes viral” to be a “reasonable” expectation of authors!! I hate being on video! I am too awkward for video!

Every single convention organizer, publisher, art director, project manager, etc. who's even once entertained the thought of using genAI imagery or LLM generated text at any stage should be paying *full* attention to how popular DragonCon is becoming for enforcing their "no genAI" policies.
