I made a starter pack for KS5 maths (teachers, posters, and other people involved in it)
Most of the starter packs I've seen for maths teachers have been for all age groups, so this one is aimed towards sixth form (16-19 ish)
Please let me know if you'd like adding (or removing)!

I'm not sure, either. I know of schools where they teach all of the options for further maths (AQA), then the students pick which 2 of the 3 they want to do. That seems crazy to me, we barely have time to teach the two options that we do!

Yeah, it's a shame to miss out on the fun stuff. A lot of our trips for first years (university visits, Bletchley Park, etc) go out in June, so fortunately they're after the exams 😊

Not much room for emergencies/uplanned absences etc, which always worries me 😬

I am that colleague (not literally, but I also did this!) πŸ˜„ It's a great course.
January 16, 2026 at 5:43 PM
Yeah, we do AQA and our exam dates are 11th and 15th May. When I realised I'd gained an extra week it made my day πŸ˜‚πŸ₯³

It depends a bit on the group/teacher, but we tend to finish a couple of weeks after Easter - around late April/early May. We have 4 x 70 mins per week, which works out roughly the same (about an extra 10 mins per fortnight)

In #MathsToday I realised I had made an error when planning out the (very tight on time) scheme of work for further maths, and I actually have a WHOLE EXTRA WEEK of lessons before the AS exam in May. I'm giddy with the prospect of what extra revision activities I might do 🀩🀣
January 15, 2026 at 10:07 PM
Only one on a weekend. We have a few open evenings too (5-8pm)
January 15, 2026 at 8:00 PM
I'm at work 9am-3pm on Saturday for an open day/interview day for prospective students for September.
Why is this half term always so full of the extra things, when you're already tired and it's cold and dark? πŸ₯ΆπŸ˜΄

Yeah, I usually give them a brief synopsis of the film and tell them to go and watch it!

Introducing the Euler step by step method for differential equations with my further maths students tomorrow, so it's time to show them the clip from Hidden Figures where Katherine Johnson uses it to find the trajectory of a space capsule πŸ˜ƒπŸš€ youtu.be/v-pbGAts_Fg?... #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

In #mathstoday, I motivated z-scores by asking who was faster - Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt?
In past years, I had done this after introducing z-scores, but starting with the question prompted great discussion:
"You can't compare them. They're different sports."

I don't think it matters as long as you enjoy the KS5 Maths conversation. Quite a few people on here are in roles relating to KS5 education but not necessarily teaching 😊

I quite like a map. Also, a list of who's who, in case I forget who a character is πŸ˜…

Probably me re-sharing the KS5 maths starter pack (I also went behind enemy lines and shared it on X, which I no longer use, so there might be people coming over from there 🀣)

Although the cube root of a negative is still a negative (so doesn't act like a modulus function...)

Or the 1st root for not doing anything
January 11, 2026 at 4:16 PM
I thought you were already on it, but I've added you again just in case πŸ˜„

Does the calculator let you do negative roots? (I don't have one near me to check) If so, I might have to begrudgingly row back on my previous response...
January 11, 2026 at 2:44 PM
I would say no - roots feel like they should be positive integers (which are then written as fractions when converted into index form)
Are they trying to use the negative to represent the reciprocal of a root? That feels wrong πŸ˜…

It's been a while since I shared this, but if anyone has recently joined Bluesky and is looking for people to follow who teach/post about A Level Maths (and post-16 Maths education), you might find this useful:

Last week it was this. From the blurb, it sounded right up my street, but after a couple of chapters I didn't have a clue what was going on: amzn.eu/d/94u0R9o

The other was popular dragon smut, which I really shouldn't be admitting to (I quite enjoyed the first one, but the second was a chore) πŸ˜…
