Buried in the regime's political takeover letter of the Smithsonian is the worst bit. Unlike exhibits, which are non-destructive towards primary materials, temporary in nature, and reversible, the foundational collections are irreplacable. They want to be able to throw stuff out.

Sickening and appalling. Can’t wait for those jokers in the WH to realize the “woke” material the NMNH is pushing are just new species descriptions of worms

That’s why we do it!! 👏🏻
amazing talk by SSB prez Corrie @corriemoreau.bsky.social this morning!

it was her videos on the Brain Scoop with @ehmee.bsky.social 10yrs ago that first introduced me to the field of evolutionary biology, so I don't know if I'd be here without her! such inspiring work! 🐜

These are some of the coolest 3D print models I've ever seen
After a few more small revisions my Barinasuchus skull reconstruction is finally done. Sculpted in #Blender, and here 3d printed at 1/6th scale.

just saw that an @npr.org podcast i interviewed for about queer nature is the first thing on the administration’s list attempting to justify defunding NPR & PBS.

there are thousands of species that are intersex (etc.) & ppl afraid of these scientific facts simply shouldn’t be running our nation.

Losing the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) would be an act of monumental neglect.

I made a video about what’s at risk, and how orgs like @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social and the American Alliance of Museums need us to help advocate for these critical places.

I spent my early career in museums and I endorse everything that Emily says here. If I can add my own take it’s that Museums produce some of the most amazing scientists and people, like Emily! Museums build empathy with the world and we need to fight for them

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

🚨NEW🚨: Donald Trump is attempting to strip away federal support for libraries. We will NOT let that happen.

Last night the President signed an order to gut the Institute of Museum & Library Services. But together, we know we can show up & defeat it.

After WWII, the Museum of Natural History in Berlin fell on the eastern side of the Wall. Scientists were prohibited from collaborating w/ anyone besides those in communist countries (which is why they’ve got a phenomenal land snail collection from Cuba.)

I recently spoke with a friend on the inside of one of those major 3-letter federal agencies, and although this isn’t groundbreaking news I thought it was helpful context:

The news cycle right now - even just for science & higher ed - is overwhelming. We have to do it, but fortunately, we don’t have to do it alone.

My team is focused on tracking what’s happening to research funding, jobs & salaries, shared datasets, university responses & safety of our communities
