“Let Republicans have the literal blood of American citizens on their hands—and make that the central issue of the shutdown. Otherwise, enjoy having your health care subsidy debate in the gulags these people would happily send us all to. I hear that poll-tests great.”
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

To the good people of Texas from your friends in Chicago…. Really??

Listen to this conversation then tell your governor not to recall the Tx national guard- return folks to their families and their jobs, and let us fight this fight without your enmity.

Mark’s right to praise the local press in Chicago. Reporters from all kinds of news organizations are making sure the truth gets out.

If you think today's news media picture is grim, take stock of how Chicago's local journalists are getting at the truth despite Homeland Security's campaign of lies and intimidation.

Not talking about the guard. Talking instead about the masked, poorly trained, hastily recruited, over-aggressive, folks who make up a large portion of the ICE and CBP folks now in this city.

About 1 in 3 US Nobel prize winners are immigrants.
About 1 in 4 were government employees at some point.
About 44% of all Nobel prize winners were educated in US higher education.
As Trump demands a Nobel prize, he is destroying the means by which America came to dominate the prizes.

Two things of note in today's announcement of the 2025 Nobel physics prize (besides the work being honored).

1: The US institutional dominance of the prize continues.
2: 2 of the three laureates are immigrants, drawn here decades ago by the then-unmatched opportunities for science here...

"None of this is making anyone safer. It’s doing real harm to children, to U.S. citizens and to America’s reputation on the world stage. It’s fulfilling the perverse, cruel fantasies of a president who wants to rule, not lead."

We've reached the point where states are protecting us from Trump. Thank goodness for Democrats like Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker who have the spine to stand up to the president’s weaselly authoritarianism.

Let's put things simply: U.S. states are now having to defend themselves against the federal government.

If the National Governors Association chooses to remain silent, Illinois will have no choice but to withdraw from the organization.

We should be standing as one against the idea that Donald Trump can call up the National Guard against our will.

Stephen Miller: "The Black people in Chicago are thrilled that we're getting the illegal aliens out of their communities who are stealing their housing, jobs, and resources."

I agree with Tom. But also… it’s the wrong question. Better to ask, unless and until we can no longer ask, how do we fight back?
radiofreetom.bsky.social
Yes. It's possible. But I the odds of that possibility increase by hysterical claims that we're already in a fascist country.
I'll just point out that some people were certain that we were headed for fascism after 2017 and that Biden couldn't win. We're here now b/c of 200K votes in three states.

Can you at least concede that there's a possibility you'll eat these words at some time? That things are escalating in ways that you didn't foresee?

The Vice President of the United States used his social media page to tell Joy Reid, a private citizen with no connection to the government, that she should express "gratitude" for how this country has treated her.

Black women remain the most consistent targets in all of this.
