My last living musical hero is still my hero but unfortunately no longer living. RIP to the great, great Mr. Tom Lehrer.

This is still ongoing, they're bringing in a helicopter and also the local donut shop just started making zebra themed treats
A lot of news is happening right now, but my personal favorite is a zebra escaped the zoo in my hometown and had been evading capture for days

I wanted to add automated subtitles to an old show I had only the video files for. I wrote a small script to use OpenAI's Whisper and create subtitle files with the right naming conventions for Jellyfin/Plex/etc.

Well I had to replace the screen in my @frame.work laptop and it had been such a long time since I'd repaired a device that actually designed to be repairable. It was great -- only took about 15 minutes!

So, in summary:

1. Signal is the most secure messaging option available to most people. Use it every day.

2. From a policy perspective, the US gov should not be discussing top secret info in a group chat... on any messaging app

3. Criticize the US government, don't spread misinfo about Signal

Sigh. Here we go again. It's really important that people are smart about this story re: Trump admin using Signal to discuss war plans.

The center-left media wants to make the story about Trump admin fucking up, which they did. But in the process they're falsely implying that Signal is "insecure."🧵

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

I know this first hand. When I was a child, my entire community was branded as spies and sabateurs, justifying our internment inside barbed wire camps for years without due process, trial or charge.

My Kindle was probably one of the most proprietary and ecosystem lockin things I've had in my life but I've manged to get pretty much all the Kindle features I like and then some in an open source setup. With self-hosted progress sync!

I now have open source ebook hosting and reading apps, including from an eink reader and phone, a library full of DRM-free ebooks, and self-hosted progress sync. I tend to use open-source and avoid DR...

It means a lot, to me and to everyone who works so hard to make Signal happen every day, to hear this from a legend like @matthewdgreen.bsky.social 💐
One of the things I’ve come to appreciate being with privacy folks this week is how unique Signal is at this moment. I know it’s maybe a cliche at this point, but it needs to be said.

This is your regular reminder that government mandated backdoors for end-to-end encrypted comms are bullshit, make everyone less safe, and should be resisted at maximum volume.
Proposed bill in Sweden would require Signal/WhatsApp to store messages users send through the apps and provide a backdoor to gov/law enforcement to read the encrypted comms. Signal head @meredithmeredith.bsky.social says Signal will halt service for users in Sweden if this becomes a requirement

Android's autocorrect has always annoyed me on occasion, But I feel like recently it has taken to replacing valid words with something else, probably because AI says that word would be more common. 🙄

Other than boycotting businesses and calling representatives, have you found solid ways to resist the regime? I want to do more but I’m struggling on deciding what that “what” should be.

I made a script to burn in auto-subtitles for videos, mainly for TikTok. I've been doing more videos and I like that subtitle method but don't love their creator tools. This one's is pretty easy to tweak. Nothing super complicated but made a common task for me much easier

Found out that TWENTY emails is considered a lot to politicians on an issue.

TWENTY.

As in, they call that getting slammed.

So next time you see a request to email your rep, or call, keep that in mind.

TWENTY is a lot.

I've been seeing a lot of posts about readers trying to curb their own book buying. Let me remind you of the library. Libraries can use your support now more than ever. When you checkout library books this lets funding authorities know the library is worthy of taxpayer money. 1/3

One thing before tomorrow:

Use your local libraries.

Get your card.

Borrow books, manga, films, audios, ebooks.

Recommend titles for purchase (usually online).

Attend promoted activities.

Fill out those "How are we doing?" questionnaires.

Tell your kids that libraries are good.

They are.
