We bought our house in spring 2022 from an elderly and infirm person. We're going to get a holiday card in the mail for that person today. I feel bad about returning mail like that because the sender is probably also elderly and infirm but on the other hand jfc tell your friends you moved, RITA.

What's great about USPS is I have a package somewhere between Eugene, Oregon and Richmond, Virginia but no one knows exactly where. Will it arrive tomorrow, as expected? Doubtful. Will it arrive in a week or a month or a year? Who knows!

Hey just a reminder that if you're sitting in the audience at the theater EVERYONE AROUND YOU CAN HEAR YOU AND WE DON'T WANT TO.

This message is directly towards the Theater Kids™️ sitting behind us at Les Miz who thought it was normal and smart and fun to hum along with One Day More. Fuck you.

The shitty part about working remotely is I don't get a snow day tomorrow. I don't even get a delayed opening. I just have to work my normal schedule like a chump.

Virginia’s Data Center Tax Breaks Cost the State $1 Billion
Data center exemptions now make up nearly 80 percent of all economic-incentive spending, even as communities raise concerns about rising power costs.

We have started the Annual Watching of the Christmas Movies.

✅ Christmas Vacation
🔳 Home Alone
🔳 Home Alone 2
🔳 Die Hard
🔳 Batman Returns
🔳 Muppet Christmas Carol

(Side note, Muppet Christmas Carol is the definitive version of the text and I will hear no arguments about it.)

I hate this time of year because it's nothing but endless night forever.

Today's mission: make pie crust, make pie filling, make sweet potato kugel, finish pie. I've had breakfast and a tall glass of water. I'm reasonably awake. Dinner is at 4. Let's do this.

I have been tasked with making the sweet potato casserole and apple pie this year. Fortunately/unfortunately we're going to a hockey game tonight so I get to do it all tomorrow. Spare a thought for me as I attempt a butter and crisco crust for the first time.

Long story which I will explain in more detail another time, but I've been digging through a list of every college sports nickname in the US and it is a fascinating journey through the American psyche.

It took Xfinity FIVE DAYS to complete a "one-day" project. This morning I gave up and refused to leave when they shut off the network. I burned two hours of leave but I also got a jumpstart on laundry, ran the dishwasher, and finished a tricky bit of a sweater, so I'll call that a win.
Update: day 3 was unsuccessful, onto day 4. Xfinity generously credited us $18 for our troubles. I'm losing my mind sitting in an empty office for 9 hours at a time. If anyone knows an exec at Xfinity please tell them I wish them nothing but pinkeye for the rest of their miserable lives.
Xfinity has been doing some kind of huge maintenance project in our neighborhood for the last couple of days, meaning I had no internet at home during the day. I've been working from my mostly empty office and it sucks. I just want to do my silly email job in comfortable pants with a cat on my lap.

Sending this to my boss who is all in on using LLMs at work.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

I think a lot of this country's problems would be solved if every 18 year old had to do two years of civil service, followed by a year in retail and a year in a restaurant.

After watching the student section at two VT games this weekend, it's clear that VCU needs to step up their game. VT has wacky inflatable tube men, giant cardboard heads, and guys willing to swear at the opposition for two hours straight. VCU just has a really good pep band.

This was all @eleanorabernathy.bsky.social's idea. She wanted to experience the vibe of the Enter Sandman entrance, and it's not exactly a difficult prospect to get me going to watch college basketball.

We're going to a couple basketball games at Virginia Tech this weekend. To prepare, I've been watching videos of the notorious Enter Sandman intros. I have to say, seeing one of those in person might be the only possible reason I'd want to go to a football game.

At a basketball game and the people next to me have apparently never heard of standing up to let someone else pass by them. It's like they've never been in public before, ever.
