Watched the Totoro stage play last night, and even though all the promotion materials kinda made it sounds like it’s just a cute and cozy story, I’m quite pleased that they actually kept the context of the family being stressed with coping with new environment and mum in hospital quite well!
Hate hate hate the reduction of Ghibli's output into a vague aesthetic. Even before generative AI, people would talk about "cozy Ghibli vibes" stripped of all context, and now we're seeing where that gets us.
