I understand how these ice skaters get started spinning but I don’t understand how they stop.

Confession: I’ve been watching people do skateboard, snowboard, and ski tricks for my entire life, and every trick looks exactly the same to me.

They don't teach you this in schools but under Abraham Lincoln's hat there was a little rat making him do things.

In our latest Sight and Sound 100 conversation, @kphipps3000.bsky.social and I talk about Carl Dreyer's ORDET, a miraculous film about a miracle: thereveal.film/48-tie-ordet...
#48 (tie): ‘Ordet’: The Reveal discusses all 100 of Sight & Sound’s Greatest Films of All Time
Faith, family, and miracles all factor into Carl Dreyer's 1955 film, in which a humble family finds themselves visited by death and, maybe, God incarnate.

NOPE is perfect. It's one of those movies with exquisite mise-en-scène. @larsenonfilm.bsky.social needs to do it for Cinema Interruptus.

When I was in junior high and high school our youth group would have a Super Bowl party but the youth pastor would turn off the TV during the commercials and the half time show. After two years of that my brother and I stopped attending the youth group Super Bowl party.

LIFE OF PI is such an incredible 3D experience. I have a home theater set-up that allows it, and I’m so happy to be able to see it that way again.

Disney+ has awakened the emotion of exasperation in my three year old by making all the Minnie Mouse show episodes only four minutes long.

I'll never break dance my way through a laser grid in a great hall, will I? As you get older, I guess you have to let some dreams die.

Somebody dare Steven Soderbergh to edit CHE: PART ONE into THE GODFATHER PART II.

A great night is taking out a bunch of movies you like and just jumping around watching scenes you enjoy, like shuffling through favorite songs. Often I notice aspects of the filmmaking I’ve never noticed before. Most often, I just jam.

If filmmakers are going to keep using “Everything In It’s Right Place” in their movies I’m going to need someone to set a whole movie to Kid A so I can hear the whole album that loud at that level of fidelity.

I don’t know what the rest of the list is but two of my favorite vocal performances are Michael Keaton as “Porco Rosso” and Jake Johnson as “Peter B. Parker.”

My son’s Creature from the Black Lagoon birthday cake. I let Costco make the cake; I made the Creature. It was my son’s idea to make him terrorize the Sour Patch Kids.

The best thing recently is that my brother got me THE IRON GIANT on blu ray for Christmas. I watched it with my kids the other day, and now my toddler daughter has taken to calling me "my Iron Giant."

squirrels, highways of the American west, regional baking traditions, manifestos, and myth & folklore
u heard sharon, everyone post about their esoteric interests right fucking now. for the good of the community, we need to be hyperfixationmaxxing.
i think this site really needs to figure out how to grow the non-politics verticals (the baseball moment was a good thing!) because i suspect a lot of the bad clusters come out of the political clusters driving 95% of ENG-lang posts

It would be a heckuva day, but the best way to see FIRE AND ASH is in 3D and immediately on the heels of THE WAY OF WATER. They really are one loooooong film. Cameron’s LOTR.

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN was my son's first "movie about movies" movie. I think it connected a lot of dots in his brain. At bedtime he was asking me production-related questions – costumes, primarily – about THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, and he wants to watch a making-of featurette tomorrow.

The best part of my six-year-old son's day today, as reported at dinner time, was watching SINGIN' IN THE RAIN for the first time.

Jayber Crow.
Ok, everyone, what book is sacred enough to you to get sworn in on?
Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.
