A brilliant thought to start the day,

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

A photo I took in Copenhagen in July: “Spectacular and innovative in the true sense of the words. That’s CopenHill. The artificial skiing slope and the recreational hiking area opened in fall 2019, built on top of the new waste management center”

Quote of the day from Philodopher Quotes, reminds of all the dear friends I have found over the decades who have loved me as much for my weaknesses as my strengths.

“It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.”

Dame Joan part 2: Over the years I spent a bit of time with Dame Joan, who was the first Pākeha ally I ever knew well. Someone fiercely proud of their own identity, capable and willing to learn about and love another culture, and devoted to addressing inequities, kua hinga te totara, dear Joan

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Dame Joan Metge this week. I was too sick to farewell her in person, so this is my wee poroporoakī to her, into the ether. I first met her in the 80s when she came to do a lecture on anthro and ended up giving me some hue she had grown, from her boot!

I just cancelled Disney+, noting the irony of the company that created Star Wars and the magnificent Andor, has now become part of the empire (sigh)!

Good morning world, quote of the day, with thanks to Philosophy Quotes:

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being.”

— Carl Jung (1875–1961), “Memories, Dreams, Reflections”

Let’s go kindle a light!

Went to Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art was the largest Māori exhibition in the history of Auckland Art Gallery and attracted attendance levels not seen by the gallery since 1989. Its triumph masked a deeper tension. Amazing! A must see..
