Ron Friedman's class at USC was an opportunity to expand our understanding of how art and sound shape cinema. One lesson really stayed with me:

Go outside. Make a list of everything you hear. The birds. An AC hum. Distant train bells. You need to hear those in your movie for the world to feel real.

I don't think stories being male-driven is inherently an issue in film. DOG DAY and FRENCH CONNECTION and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA are male-driven. The issue with many movies today is derivation, bowing to the beloved faves, which is childish. Echoes of echoes of emotion. Homeopathic adult storytelling.
