Professor of Art History & Cultural Policy at University College Dublin (UCD). Irish studies; art history; museums; photography; cultural omnivore. Angeleno by birth, Dubliner by choice. Mildly interesting at times.
You know what we won't need once handwriting recognition software has done its thing? Archivists, curators, conservators, catalogers, codicologists, or paleographers. We won't need archives either. We won't need diplomatics, editorial theory, book or media history, or material culture studies 🗃️🧵

Amazing charity shop find today: three professionally framed original 1937 movie ads for ‘Parnell’, starring Clark Gable and Myrna Loy. They are fabulous - exhibition quality framing 😱 €5 each - so of course I bought all of them 🤩

Really interesting read on the challenges AI poses to documentaries, truth, and the archive. All of this of course extends to static as well as moving images — and the full spectrum of colourisation to fabrication.

Really enjoyed the new ‘Changing Ireland’ exhibition at the @nmireland.bsky.social - Collins Barracks! Lovely integration of commissioned poems by Paula Meehan; fascinating selection of objects, beautifully curated and displayed.

On the last day of Michael D’s presidency, paying tribute to his splendid run as Head of State for the past 14 years. Meeting him has always been such a pleasure, incl for the 2019 launch of the Strzelecki exhibition with the Embassy of Poland in the Royal Irish Academy with Prof Peter Gray (1/3)

We’ve gotten numb to it but Trump threatening NYC voters with federal funding to vote a certain way is the kind of shit that should get him unanimously impeached today. Insane fascist bullshit.

Exciting news! Filming will soon start on a Bad Bridgets film, inspired by Elaine Farrell & Leanne McCormick's great book. We're delighted to have both Elaine & Leanne on our USIHS Committee (for many reasons, this is just today's extra one) @badbridgetbook.bsky.social deadline.com/2025/10/dais...
