Sarah Nelson JANUARY 30, 2026 AT 2:31 PM Judge orders journalist Georgia Fort released U.S. Magistrate Judge Dulce Foster ordered the release of Twin Cities independent journalist Georgia Fort this afternoon, rejecting the U.S. government's claims that her allegations constitute a crime of violence that necessitate keeping her detained. Fort was detained this morning, as was former CNN anchor Don Lemon, after covering an anti-ICE protest during a St. Paul church service Jan. 18. Foster denied the U.S. government's attempts to bring additional conditions for Fort's release, including a "stay away" order for her related to Cities Church. Kevin Riach, Fort's lawyer, called the request, and the government seeking her continued detention, "outrageous." "This is a sad day for federal criminal justice," Riach said. "It's a sinister turn of events in our country" Cheers erupted in the courtroom at the conclusion of Fort's brief hearing.
