Great to see so many new people joining! I tend to post about palliative and end of life care research and death studies, sharing resources and publications, event links, etc. Anthropologists, by training, connecting within and beyond the discipline.

New podcast episode where I talk about what's going on with mortality in the US

A wide-ranging discussion of what happened before the pandemic & what's happened since then; racial disparities and how to get our heads around their scope; why things might be going so badly for Millennials & Gen Zers
Prof. Elizabeth Wrigley-Field Discusses Excess Deaths
Because the US death rate has exceeded that of 21 other high income countries for over four decades, an estimated 14.7 million US lives have been lost since1980.

Are you interested in death, dying, loss, grief, and related topics, from historical studies to current issues? Then I'd recommend following @openthanatology.bsky.social and keeping an eye out for resources it shares.

Back from #MedSoc2025 and head still buzzing. Some great talks on co-production, crip time and research, chronic illness and the workplace. After missing the conference for years, I'm glad I could go again.

The kind of #WritingAdvice that make me enjoy writing even more 😀

Unsolicited #WritingAdvice of the day:
Writing a spooky story about a haunted house, but unsure how to believably write your angry ghost? Just listen to a podcast where the hosts are getting the facts wrong - you can scream and scream but they'll never hear you! 😂

These are only some of the sympathy cards made by @ddd17-2025.bsky.social conference attendees in Utrecht! Way better than what you'd find in the drugstore card aisle, right? Digital versions are now available for download: www.deadparentswhatnow.com/sympathy-car...

Between a thumbprint and a heart, black text reads: It's hard to find words. Should I say I'm sorry or offer my condolences? I guess I'm just letting you know that I think it's really shitty that your person died and that I'm thinking of you. Clinical heart monitor lines wave into colorful squiggles from top to bottom. A red heart is in the center of the image. Skeleton surrounded by colorful stars and a pink border. Text below reads: It sucks now and will for a while! Let's grab a coffee! A colorful picture of two people talking on a phone connected by a curling cord. Blue text at the top reads: My Sympathy.

It's a bit before my usual research period, but does anyone have any recommended reading on how the Registration Act 1836 firmed up existing frameworks of death admin?

There could be a book in that! Especially thinking about what kinds of social capital and how it can be used (or not) for different kinds of care and deaths. I'm not sure if others have done work on potential correlation with openness changes over time - would be fascinating to learn more about

ooh there is a crowd-sourcing activity that could be done here!
