Life guard on duty. Fortunately the ice is thick in the bay on the south shore of Lake Superior, so Finlay hasn't had to rescue anyone. 🙏😁 There is a virtual ice fishing village further out. We'll see what warmer temps bring. Stay safe out there!

And remember - do not approach harbor seal pups if you see them in the wild! It's not an issue of stress for them but the mothers go off foraging and will see you from the water - and if you linger too long, they might abandon their pup. Enjoy them from afar!

The pup did manage to get out of the surf zone safely and had its first nap after reuniting with mom 🥹
The mother and pup reuinited, out of the swash zone, and touch noses.

Though a natural in the water, navigating the sea to land transition is a challenge... this little one has a lot of practice ahead!
The harbor seal pup struggling to get out of the surf, with its flippers askew and a look of determination as a comically small amount of water is toppling it over. The harbor seal pup has been rolled onto its back, its flippers limp for the moment - and the umbilical cord is still present. The harbor seal pup is back on its belly, but a wave rolling back down the beach is now hitting it right in the face. Just as the pup has returned to its mother another wave is rolling the poor little guy again.

We arrived and the pup was having its first swim lesson - at one hour old! This little one was already a natural.
