Pierre Trudeau supported proportional representation, and so should you.
Black-and-white photo of Pierre Trudeau with a quote beside him that reads:
“I would support a system of proportional representation… Rather than using the present system where you can have in the West, 20–30% of the votes and zero members. And conversely, as the Conservative Party has had in Quebec, 8–15% of the vote and zero members. And same for the NDP. I think we have to move in this direction.”
– Pierre Trudeau, 1980.

Our voting system creates polarization, and in time, it leads to what we're seeing in the US. The fix? Proportional Representation!!

1/18 “This is what a two-party system looks like.”
— Chantal Hebert, CBC Election Night 2025

First-past-the-post is failing voters. It fuels division, strategic voting, and regional shutouts—while pushing Canada closer to U.S.-style hyperpolarization.

Conservatives fighting Conservatives. The real issue? First-past-the-post forces the Canadian right into unstable big tents where infighting is the norm.

With proportional representation, no one needs to cram under one tent — every voice gets fair representation.
Screenshot of a tweet from Jas Johal. It says: “NEW – During Monday’s caucus meeting BC Conservative MLA Dr. Anna Kindy tore into leader John Rustad over the removal of Elenore Sturko, blasting it as ‘cancel culture’ and demanding all voices be heard. The irony? Kindy is one of the caucus’s most conservative members. #bcpoli.” The tweet is posted from the account @JasJohalBC, with a profile picture of Jas Johal in a suit.

Congratulations to Emily Lowan, the new leader of the BC Green Party!

Thank you for championing proportional representation and pushing for a fairer democracy where every vote counts.

If you don't think road safety should be left to governments holding majority control with only 40% of the vote, demand proportional representation.

Worth a read: Dan Robertson argues in The Hub that Conservatives should embrace proportional representation.

When even conservative strategists are calling out the broken system, you know it’s time for change.

A system where over 630,000 votes equals only one seat is not democracy, it's distortion.

As the NDP leadership race ramps up, candidates must make proportional representation central to their platforms so every voter gets a voice, no matter where they live.

Proportional representation means you get the voice you vote for, no matter where you call home.” At the bottom it says “Learn more at fairvote.ca.”

In Ontario, Conservatives face two choices: obey Doug Ford or risk ridicule for speaking up.

That’s the trap of first-past-the-post.

Proportional representation would let different conservative voices win seats instead of being forced under one banner.

No riding thinks the same way. But First Past the Post acts like they do. It shuts out voices and wastes votes.

Proportional representation makes every vote count and ensures fair representation for every community.

There are now lots of studies that show that First Past the Post creates polarization of parties and people. And to make matters worse, there is no end to it. Pernicious polarization is the final result. Sadly, civil war is a possible outcome. Implementing PR is not only fair game, it's vital.

The BC Conservatives’ chaos is not random. It is a product of First Past the Post.

Proportional representation would let every conservative voice stand on its own and still count.

10. Fairness for everyone.

No party, left or right, should get 100 percent of the power with only 40 percent of the vote.

Conservatives should lead the call for a system that is fair, stable, and democratic. (11/12)

The BC Conservatives are imploding, but the real problem isn’t just leadership.

It’s First Past the Post, which forces everyone on the right into one unstable party.

Unchecked power? Where does it lead to? Look South!

When governments feel secure with unchecked power, it becomes too easy to silence voices they don’t like.

A healthier democracy ensures diverse perspectives are represented in Parliament itself, that’s what proportional representation delivers.

For whoever becomes the new Ontario Liberal leader: your first order of business must be demanding a proportional system so no party ends up with only 11% of the seats with 30% of the vote again.

That's how democracy should be.
Two pie charts titled "Ontario votes 2025." The left chart shows the popular vote: PC 43%, Liberal 29.9%, NDP 18.6%, Green 4.8%, Other 3.8%. The right chart shows the distribution of seats: PC 64.5%, NDP 21.8%, Liberal 11.3%, Green 1.6%, Other 0.8%. The charts highlight the contrast between how people voted and how seats were allocated.

That's more disturbing than the decision itself. What the heck? #cdnpoli
