The petition from the family of Alejandro Carranza says the military bombed his fishing boat on Sept. 15, when he was sailing off Colombia's Caribbean coast, in violation of human rights conventions.
Family of Colombian man killed in U.S. strike files human rights challenge
In a petition to the premier human rights watchdog in the Americas, the first challenge to U.S. military strikes on alleged drug-carrying boats argues that the death was an extrajudicial killing.

I dug into the expanding fight over disability parking placards for pregnant people.

Is it a no-brainer pro-family move or does it make life harder for disabled people? Are those even discrete categories?
Behind the fight over expanding disability parking placards for pregnancy
Supporters call the efforts pro-family. But critics warn that with too few accessible spots already, expanding placards could shut more disabled people, including moms, out of everyday life.

Hi! It's a bleak time for news, especially LGBTQ+ news. As a reporter, I'm able to cover the issues impacting LGBTQ+ people full-time because I work at The 19th.

With just $5 or $10, you can help keep us going. Donate here and support independent media — and a newsroom that actually puts you first.

Just 15 days after her daughter’s birth, as Nayra Guzmán, her mom and younger brother loaded into their car for their daily drive to the NICU, they were surrounded by immigration enforcement agents and whisked away to detention. @shefali.bsky.social and Mel Leonor Barclay for @19thnews.org
Her baby was in the NICU. She was in ICE detention.
Before Trump took office, postpartum immigrants were rarely detained by ICE. Nayra Guzmán was detained while her 15-day-old baby was in the NICU.
