one of the things I've been thinking a lot about lately as both an elder millennial and washingtonian is that the *absolute best case scenario* is us spending the latter half of our working lives building anew replacement institutions and organizations for the ones currently being dismantled

1. Build huge subscriber base by telling them their $ supports democracy.
2. Don’t establish other revenue sources.
3. Rug-pull subscribers by pushing opinion side to the right.
4. Subscribers leave, revenue falls.
5. Enact crippling newsroom cuts.

Hey #BikeDC, as of 9pm there's a water main break or something on the MBT behind City State, basically converting the trail to a stream. Not passable. I called @dcwater.bsky.social to report it, but I had to tell them the trail is DDOT, not DPR. Who else do I loop in to get this elevated?

treated myself to a crosstown rush hour snowy bike commute from Penn Quarter to Georgetown via Washington Circle because my life just isn’t stressful enough

biked to work today, mostly using 9th Street. From RIA to Penn, it was mostly good absent a couple of intersections where the plowed snow had piled up. With a little more melt and maybe one more quick round of shoveling at those spots, we should be fully back in business

want to put some of that end-of-day work stress in the rear view? might I suggest a metal garden shovel and the nearest 50 square feet of sidewalk ice?

the Kennedy Center is much more visible to Washingtonians and commuters and tourists than the East Wing was and I think that’s going to shape a lot of the very visceral hate to any potential external reno

if you see soldiers shoveling, they're the home team.
if you see soldiers standing around doing nothing, they're the visitors.

got it.

We know that an area of concern is around sidewalks and curb cuts, especially near bus stops.

For that, we are activating the DC National Guard.

Safe Passage teams have also been out helping clear crosswalks and sidewalks near schools.

Thank you to all who are out helping.

It’s cost the federal government *$223 million* for the National Guard to be deployed in the District between August-December 2025, and *$55 million* a month for 2,950 personnel to continue being deployed here… www.cbo.gov/system/files...
