Has @elsevierconnect.bsky.social hit a new low? I just recieved a demanding email imforming me that my review was a negative three days late ... three days before the deadline for my review. This is honestly not ok.

van Klink et al 2020 receives an expression of concern in @science.org

@retractionwatch.com also cites our technical comment on this paper published in WIRES Water in 2021 🧪
The notice, published today, applies to a 2020 meta-analysis measuring population patterns of freshwater and terrestrial insects and predicting what might drive changes in population numbers.

New paper, Great news:
We have been saying for years that making the editorial board more diverse was needed
We now show that diverse team of editors makes for more diverse reviewers
More Inclusive=Better Science
Things are getting better on this❤️

At the start of the year I hit 2,000 species on @inaturalist.bsky.social and set myself the goal of adding 1,000 more this year. I finish the year with 1,600 new species recorded. Enormous thanks to the 635 identifiers who helped along the way! 🙌 #iNaturalist #Biodiversity

It was a pleasure to serve as opponent in the PhD defence of @alfredoventuro.bsky.social at the Czech University of Life Sciences (CZU) last week. Excellent work on the long-term and off-season effects of wildflower strips on biodiversity. Well deserved — congratulations, Dr Venturo!

Spoiler alert: it's better to have a good theoretical understanding and design appropriate statistical models than it is to throw zillions of superficially "okay, fine" models at a poorly specified (and often deliberately vague) target.

A bit of good thinking >>> lots of poor thinking.

Shocking!

This is also a long known problems in entomological collections - collectors do not want the common species, they accumulate the rare species ....
Large citizen science datasets are powerful tools for biodiversity science, but they may have biases. Nice new paper from @louisbackstrom.bsky.social et al. showing that for eBird and Birdtrack lists there is a tendency for rare species to be over-represented

Life at the (h)edge—Multidiversity in shrub ecotones is driven by habitat quality & shrub foliage cover 🌱🌏

To maximise biodiversity benefits across taxa, recommends managing shrub ecotones at the landscape scale, maintaining a mosaic of open & half-open shrub ecotones 📈🧪
