Just an Italian nerd who spends too much time searching for his country's tornadoes - Part of PRETEMP

HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE!
Italy is, as of now, the European country (and really, correct me if I'm wrong, the only country IN THE WORLD outside the U.S.) with more than two confirmed F5/EF5/IF5 tornadoes. @essl-ecss.bsky.social did the hardest part of the job, but I'm happy to have been of help

🚨Check out our new IODP paper on Kolumbo Volcano in Greece. Despite being one of Europe's most dangerous volcanoes not much is known about its eruptive history. The paper led by @abigaillily.bsky.social adds important insight into the Kolumbo-Santorini system

Today I finally found new information on 25 Aug 1890 confirming another strong tornado, probably one of a kind for the area. Tree pieces fell after a 10 km flight, a trailer was embedded into the ground and the town of Citerna, Umbria, was decimated with 5+ deaths and 60+ injuries

It's very likely that many (most?) strong cold-season East Coast cyclones produce waterspout outbreaks over the Gulf Stream. No doubt that this was a mesocyclonic tornado.

Tornadoes continue in western Europe
Une tornade a été observée à Mios (Gironde) sous ce remarquable écho. Plusieurs dégâts sont signalés et la tornade a pu être filmée :

Here is a short radar loop, with a marker along the damage track visible in the image on the left. The small region of greenish colors at 23:24Z nicely matches with the location of the damage, which increases confidence that it is actually a (faint) tornadic debris signature.

Portugal and Spain are looking at tremendous precipitation from an onslaught of atmospheric rivers over the next 14-days. Flooding will certainly be a very real threat if these numbers materialize.

2 phénomènes violents (possibles tornades) ont provoqué des dommages en Aquitaine hier dimanche. Enquêtes en cours pour identifier ces phénomènes et déterminer leur intensité. Les images radar confirment qu'ils sont liés à des supercellules LT.

With the modern Sicilian newspapers mostly milked, the most impressive period remains the November months of the early 2000s, with at least 18 tornadoes confirmable from just four months. Damage wasn't limited only to property unfortunately with at least 6 injuries

Still going through Sicily newspapers and boy what an outbreak I found on 21 Nov 2002: at least 7 tornadoes in the eastern part of the island, including this impressive waterspout that caused damage and 3 injuries in Roccalumera

E' ancora allerta rossa

One year ago today Sicily suffered the largest known tornado outbreak for the month of January in Italy. Five confirmed twisters and two additional waterspouts out to sea caused damage around the southeast portion of the island, creating new records in this regard

Currently going through historical Sicily tornadoes and this was one of the events I wanted to discover more about. Turns out the night of 08 Nov 1997 featured (relatively weak) twin tornadoes landfalling in the Agrigento area causing at least 16 injuries in total

THANK YOU GOOGLE EARTH FOR LISTENING TO MY PRAYERS

99th tornado in Italy from 2025, the elusive fifth member of the January 17th outbreak in Sicily in Aci San Filippo. Downed trees from above are quite incriminating

Un phénomène venteux violent a provoqué des dommages sous orage près de Tarbes vendredi. Des analyses sont en cours afin de déterminer s'il s'agit d'une tornade ou d'une rafale descendante.

Are you interested in tornadoes in Germany (temporal+spatial distribution) you should read our recently published paper. It is the first detailed statistical analysis since the paper of Dotzek (2003). Would be happy to learn about statistics in other European countries!

Since parts of Italy are getting snowed on, I want to show the color the sky had back last June 16th in my area as a dying storm rolled by. I'm impressed by how a destroyed shelf cloud and tons of outflow could still be this photogenic
