One of the social media feeds that ruins my days is constantly serving up stuff (unsolicited) from that website, The Onion. Being smug & sneery may have been ok for some, 10 or 20 years ago, but in 2025 it just strikes me as insufferable, like a bad tribute act for a band I disliked to start with

I doubt any of the teams will be booking budget hotels with decent breakfasts and good transport links.
I did quite like the Yank pundit at the World Cup draw seemingly getting genuinely excited about how straight after this draw the teams will need to start booking their hotels. I can relate to sometimes having to book hotels, even, occasionally for reasons to do with football.

Chawton House is amazing, btw. It has a library which includes Said’s Culture and Imperiaism, which contains his essay on Austen. The essay is about how all that fierce/polite Austen domestic fucking & money drama takes place in rooms shut off from the savagery of colonialism. Great place to read it
