For the past year or so I've been having a real blast in a Dolmenwood game that's essentially turned into this. It's a bit less freeform than what's described in the thread, in that there is kind of a clear "A team" and "B team" group of characters (and extras), but mixing and matching is very fun.

Troupe style is one of those approaches to RPGs that people resist but I tend to find love when they actually try it.

Basically:
You have a character that's yours.
You may have a secondary character.
You then have a pool of other characters you can grab as needed.

Most food kitchens/pantries can get things at rates that we cannot in bulk
