There have always been signs that tech companies were overpromising on AI, and that investors were blindly and dramatically over-indexing on its potential.

I want to reshare the essay Janet Haven and I wrote for Foreign Policy in October 2024.

A few quotes from that piece:
AI’s Alarming Trend Toward Illiberalism
Left ungoverned, the technology opens pathways to undermine democracy.

After Biden commuted the sentences of 37 men on federal death row last year, the Trump administration is retaliating by sending them to the supermax. Prisoners are locked in cells smaller than a parking space 22-24 hours a day.

One prisoner told me he fears he won't make it out alive.

My latest:
Death Row Prisoners Granted Clemency by Biden Brace for "Living Hell" Under Trump - Bolts
Trump officials are retaliating by imposing the harshest conditions in the entire federal prison system, including near total isolation.

“We have daily crises, and the same shortages and deficiencies in supplies, and we are still exhausted as we are still receiving lots of casualties.

“There isn’t much difference from period before the ceasefire. Unfortunately, the bombing is still going on...We don’t feel there is a big change.”

This is not a plan for peace. It is a plan for Russian victory and Ukrainian capitulation, argues Christian Caryl.
Don’t Call This a ‘Peace Plan’
If the U.S.-Russia plan for Ukraine goes forward, Donald Trump will be remembered as the Neville Chamberlain of the 21st century.

In Darfur, RSF forces have attacked hospitals, clinics, patients, and aid workers – clear war crimes under international law. Sudan’s medical system has become a battlefield. The U.S. government must use all leverage to end the slaughter immediately.

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

The confluence of the Comey/James dismissals one hour and the DoD probe into Kelly the next is the perfect illustration of this regime's "strategy" for punishing political enemies: throw spaghetti, fusilli, and a bunch of random household object at wall to see what sticks. They are not good at this.
Mark Kelly: "My wife, Gabby Giffords, meeting with her constituents, shot in the head. Six people killed around her, a horrific thing. She spent six months in the hospital. We know what political violence is and we know what causes it too, The statements that Donald Trump made incites others."
