OMICs studies highlight that Kwash may be a combination of malnutrition & inflammatory syndrome leading to the disruption of the extracellular matrix and sphingolipid metabolism, with possible implications for capillary permeability and for the function of the lymphatic system.

I wonder what a good alternative would be? Germ-free mice also have major gut morphological, biochemical and behavioural differences than wt. Plus they have it from birth. Any thoughts? Or perhaps we just need to keep these in mind...
