I can barely stand to touch Bluesky nowadays, but my friend Tasneem in Gaza has a new fundraiser link. Times are hard everywhere, but if you have a little to spare, I hope you will consider donating.

I gotta get surgery for my baby Candy to get an infected tooth removed and it’s $600 even with her insurance so I need at least 6 $100 commissions, so if anyone would like one or knows someone that would, I’d greatly appreciate y’all passing it on 🥺

We live in horrifying, depressing times, and there will still be people in the future who will claim they had no idea it was happening.
Let the record show:
-multiple genocides
-concentration camps
-people being stripped of their rights
Happening. Now.

not a single person's job, not a single grant, will be saved by surrendering instead of fighting. ask columbia.

I don’t know what his resignation letter said, but this was his message to the UVa community.

Update from President Ryan
UNIVERSITY VIRGINIA
To the University community:
I am writing, with a very heavy heart, to let you know that I have submitted my resignation as President of the University of Virginia
To make a long story short, I am inclined to fight for what I believe in, and I believe deeply in this University. But I cannot make a unilateral decision to fight the federal government in order to save my own job.
To do so would not only be quixotic but appear selfish and self-centered to the hundreds of employees who would lose their jobs, the researchers who would lose their funding, and the hundreds of students who could lose financial aid or have their visas withheld. This is especially true because I had decided that next year would be my last, for reasons entirely separate from this episode—including the fact that we concluded our capital campaign and have implemented nearly all of the major initiatives in our strategic plan.
be my last, for reasons entirely separate from this episode-including the fact that we concluded our capital campaign and have implemented nearly all of the major initiatives in our strategic plan.
While there are very important principles at play here, I would at a very practical level be fighting to keep my job for one more year while knowingly and willingly sacrificing others in this community. If this were not so distinctly tied to me personally, I may have pursued a different path. But I could not in good conscience cause real and direct harm to my colleagues and our students in order to preserve my own position.
It has been an honor to be your President.
Thanks for the outpouring of support over the last few days and weeks. My deepest gratitude to all of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni, who make this University and this community both great and good. This was an excruciatingly difficult decision, and I am heartbroken to be leaving this way.
Best,
Jim

Whenever a take boils down to “We were doing just fine until the gender freaks showed up”— 1) who’s “we”? 2) let me just copy and paste everything Sylvia Rivera said at Christopher Street Liberation Day 1973 AGAIN.

Conservatives have long known, even since before Anita Bryant’s “Save the Children,” that pearl clutching about kids is a conversation ender, so that’s what they’re doing. This take is like blaming a kid for standing where the playground bully’s fist was about to go.

I have better things to do with my time than formulate a point-by-point refutation of Andrew Sullivan. But to just respond to the bit you quoted: we didn’t pick this fight. Conservatives chose to focus on kids, not us, and we’re simply responding.

Remember when Colbert roasted W at the 2006 correspondents‘ dinner, quipping that “reality has a well-known liberal bias”? Twenty years later (almost), and the NPS is now required to crowdsource “information” based on personal feelings because the historical facts are deemed too unpleasant. Cool. 🗃️

Between starvation and bombs, any efforts to keep Tasneem and her family alive are best described as desperate now. A small amount of food has been let in; our donations give a better chance of being able to afford the steep markup.

Tasneem is getting closer to her goal, but she still has a ways to go. As I’m sure you know, the situation is dire, with constant bombings and inadequate food and other necessary resources. Anything you could do would help.
