Thomas Boswell's books are wonderful reads.

I am no longer a baseball fan, but I have plenty of memories of magical moments. Ron Darling pitching in a scoreless game into the 7th, and the Reds leading off with a triple, and him proceeding to strike out the side, for instance. Moments like that stick with me.

Spanish American War, Wilmington NC, Philippines, ALL sorts of cultural references that make a layman scurry to the internet.

Doomscrolling break!
I imagine every historian has a list of Most Neglected Aspect of History. I welcome them in the replies. Here's a thread on my candidate:

The California steamship lines from 1849–1869, during the gold rush until the first transcontinental railroad's completion.

You know what I bet you could have fun with? An Annotated Guide to John Sayles's A Moment In The Sun. Somebody needs to do that. Well, if you don't have fun doing it you might have fun reading it anyway.

(The other thing that gets me about that scene is that Alice thinks Ralph's Raccoon Lodge is a stupid group, and that being named Raccoon of the Year is a nonsense award. But she knows how seriously Ralph takes it, so she bursts his bubble as gently as she can, knowing how much it means to him.)

At first I countered that it was Ivanka, but she can't muster the energy any longer... but to do what Alice did you need the energy and patience.

My favorite moment in The Honeymooners is when Alice has to tell Ralph that he’s not going to be Raccoon of the Year, so he doesn’t make a public fool of himself.

Trump needs an Alice.

This is not (much of) a spoiler but in One Battle After Another there's a moment during a protest where someone gets out of a police van and lights & throws a Molotov cocktail

may have harmed himself in doing so.

This is interesting: the military industry was thought to have protected itself against cuts in the defense budget by having factories in a broad range of states (all?); loss of jobs was a card they could play against senators and reps. Trump has worked to get the federal gvt less DC centric, and

Today my daughter's preschool is holding a farewell assembly for one of her classmates whose mother has no choice but to self deport. The school is hoping it will be joyful in tone, so we might make this less upsetting for this 3 year old.

There's just no words for the uselessness of this cruelty.
