I learned about trans people from an internet forum when I was 16 years old. On legacy media trans people were nothing more than the butt of irregular ignorant jokes. The internet helped me realise my own sexuality, not feel so alone, come out, and everything really.

I think a good example of the over veneration of Starfleet is when 7 of 9 joined and stayed in Starfleet in Star Trek Picard. It made better sense for her character to realise she was a unique individual and do her own thing. My opinion.
