An industry boom that decimated the creative potential of the medium by making every mf a D&D designer. Also, he didn't "kill" past tense: continues to kill. I cannot market my game because 98% of the outreach channels I should reach won't cover a game that ain't about killing people in a dungeon.
Sometimes you give Dancey the benefit of the doubt because OGL created an industry boom in the '00s.

But you have to remember he did it for Machiavellian reasons, and successfully killed any number of young RPG publishers.

Late-era capitalism is probably the theme the runs through his history.
I think the damage was largely done back in 2000 when Ryan Dancey (then in charge of RPG development in WotC) came up with the OGL, with the explicit intention of driving all other systems out of the market. By opening up D&D, it enticed other publishers to support D20, and forget their own stuff.

My webstore heycentaur.com is finally up!
This took so many months of labour (mostly my partner’s), but it is all ready and running.
Physical copies of Kala Mandala are now available, shipping to most of the world.

Kinda wild that the Expressionist Games Manifesto didn't get past the first round of the bloggies. Regardless of Jay Dragon being a serial harasser, that post sparked more conversation and was at least more interesting that the vast majority of these entries.

not from the cinema but recently Kinds of Kindness was fucking horrendous
fun question: what’s the maddest you’ve ever been leaving a movie theater? not necessarily worst movie you’ve seen, but the one that just pissed you off the most. mine is Batman v Superman

Not only was the pre-OGL more exploratory, player mindset was more geared towards exploration. We couldn't wait to try new games and see how different they were.

This is about Dancey, now COO of AEG, hyperventilating over the possibility of replacing designers with AI and saying some of AEG's games are so unoriginal that an AI could have made them. (Of the ones he mentioned, the one I'd played was a good, fun and non-standard design.)
Reposting with ALT because this kind of phenomenal disdain and disrespect from within the industry literally against two of their own titles and the designer who made them is important to recognize.

Look at this. Read the first line and think of the big discourse words.

This is the same motherfucking line OSR peddlers continue to repeat. They are pawns at the service of cultural homogenisation.
As Ryan Dancey discourse is crossing the timeline, a reminder of what the OGL was *actually* supposed to achieve. It wasn't some benevolent gift to the community; Dancey was trying to drive system competitors out of the market.

Pre the OGL the RPG scene was chaotic and messy, but bursting with ideas. Post it, we got the d20 glut.

Every complaint about D&D's oversized presence in the hobby is his plan working as intended. Every shitty KS 5e cash grab is his baby.

He has done more damage to the hobby as a whole than anyone else I can think of.

We saw the effects quickly.
