Their talk wasn't backed up with actions that matched their stated values. Honestly, this isn't even meant as a value judgment on them as people, they just...ran it in the Standard SV Tech Startup Way, believing a values document and good intentions would be enough, but the issues were foundational.

They pitched themselves as leftists acting for communal good, but... They organized themselves as a for-profit company. No community stake/contributions. Kept the source closed and privately owned. And their "benevolent" VC funder proved to be a contemptuous, ableist asshole at the end.

Yeah, everything about how they organized the company, locked down their IP, handled moderation disputes, and chose a tech stack so complex that I once told a company that a team of 3 *dedicated* engineers was understaffing its ongoing maintenance, while Cohost was trying the same with even less...

You can't tech your way out of this problem because tech people fundamentally lack the ability, inclination, and curiosity to learn about community building.

This is the core of why every social media platform run by leftists fails. Knowing how to run a server precludes an understanding of people.
