Struggles with travel are unlikely to abate, whether from pandemics, fuel prices, or political unrest due to your country electing a narcissistic squash. This is why @futuremeetings.bsky.social keeps exploring practices and technologies like VR that could really connect us when it matters the most.
With everything happening in the US right now, how safe are scientific conferences for foreign participants in the US? I think this is something we have to discuss as a scientific community. I am hesitating to register for US meetings due to the unpredictable situation. Others who feel the same?

When using VR for scientific events with @futuremeetings.bsky.social, we've found a key component for success is #BeyondBeingThere: don't try to mirror the in-person experience but leverage the online space to show full-sized interactable models, or hold discussions on an asteroid.
It's really not even that it looks bad. It does look bad, but it's the utter failure of imagination on display. So you're going to hang out and talk with friends about getting dumped. Why not be the size of Godzilla when you do it? You could be traveling through a black hole. Come on
