The big problem we have is lock-in. Skype was never quite good at what we wanted out of it and Discord is. And also eternal persistence (or the illusion of) of stuff put there made us... behave badly with information/logs. Transition is gonna have to happen but loool is it gonna suck
In 2016 or so everyone was like "man Skype sucks. We should move to something that isn't Skype." and then everyone overnight just packed their things and moved to Discord. No drama, no hand wringing or complaining about discord being cringe, we just did it. Surreal to think about now.

There will not be a general purpose replacement for discord that doesn't do small-group streaming and that is *not* a small ask.
Certain scenes with specific, lesser means will be able to find different solutions, but in general? That's the crux feature.

It's been fifteen years and I still don't think there's a line in any game, or any work of fiction period, more horrifying than "You lack the qualifications to exercise free will"
