Took me a while to finish the new Hartley because I kept watching this part over and over.

I missed this news last week. Best 2025 premiere I’ve seen; very happy it’ll be making the rounds next year.

The wrong Linklater-directed lead male performance of a celebrated artist whose surname gets filed under G–H has awards traction.

This piece not even mentioning THE DESCENDANTS makes me feel very old. (Thankfully I already did!)

We’re fast approaching the point at which literally every calendar date for the rest of human history will be considered “on the eve of an election.” Like feeding mogwai after midnight. It’s always after midnight!

Oh for fuck’s sake. (My first time encountering this, dunno how long it’s been happening. It’s not on everything, yet.)

Half-watching the Alicia Silverstone Fake Hallmark Christmas Movie with my folks and while it’s the usual formulaic nonsense I gotta say Silverstone (who I’ve seen only in Lanthimos films for the past like 20 years) is quite a deft comedienne. (Also Jameela Jamil is in it basically doing Tahani.)

My 80-year-old dad still insists on climbing ladders to place Xmas decorations in ridiculously high places.

1. No it isn’t. Lotta dissension.
2. Why are we riffing on Austen here? That’s two centuries later!

We need to redefine the Turing test such that an artificial intelligence can be said to have consciousness, or to genuinely think, if and only if, without being expressly programmed to do so, it tells its interlocutor to shut the fuck up about that, enough already.

I somehow discovered ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD quite young (definitely before the film came out; might’ve been via BRAZIL) and it was formative, literally enlarging my sense of dramaturgical possibility whilst instilling a delight in wordplay and badinage that persists to this day. R.I.P.

Just saw JAY KELLY at a theater that I last visited when it was showing (first-run) Woody Allen’s ANOTHER WOMAN. Now heading to see HAMNET at a theater I’m pretty sure I haven’t been to since JOHNNY HANDSOME.

“Have you got a boffo ending for this four-hour miniseries, Lars?”

“Yes. The pregnant character with the bizarre ultrasounds finally gives birth.”

“Oh. Okay, I suppose that’s—“

“To a fully grown Udo Kier.”

“…”

Not sure why we’re doing April Fools in November but I’m not falling for “Marjorie Taylor Greene announces she’ll resign after Trump called her a traitor” and “Trump beams at and fawns over Mamdani in first meeting as if he’s the son Trump never had.”

How many Scorsese profiles pegged to his next major film will be headlined “Marty Supreme”? 100% or just 95%?

I’m fascinated by how instantly identifiable AI writing is. Has a prose style/rhythm no less distinct than my own.
