An education board conversation about what kids need to know when they graduate actually prompted this conversation!

The curriculum here varies district by district, but required classes (at least in my state) still have fairly consistent attendance.
So if it's not an elective, they're more likely to get the content.

I can't speak to how Canada does things.

Also "how not to be a self righteous prick on someone else's timeline" but I'm afraid that needs a regular refresher course.

Students in Canada tend to have a different experience than students in the US.

We're making apple cranberry crumble in mini cauldrons because it's the season of the witch and we deserve good things.

The class each high school should provide isn't "home ec," it's Life Skills.
A month dedicated to each focus through the year, like a substitute parent.
Navigation and transport.
Access and self advocacy.
Media literacy.
Civic participation.
Basic automotive.
Basic cooking.
And budgeting/credit.

This is your reminder that children are the absolute most marginalized class, and constantly used as objects to justify sweeping fascism and oppression.
As if being a kid wasn't hard enough.

I had to go down a painful rabbit trail this morning, to find the method to block forced UI updates for android (to prevent the AI push).

The Reddit threads are an exercise in neurodivergence arguing with everyone else.

I think I'm going to have to construct a barn door, essentially, from scratch for this greenhouse.

It won't keep the cold totally out, but should keep out the snow mostly.

I haven't been to the regular grocery store in a couple weeks, and in that couple weeks a lot of my regular groceries went up by between 50% and 200%.
Not at Costco. Not at Hmart. Just at Kroger.

None of my kids would break it on *purpose* but the adhd tax is intense in this house
genderqueerwolf.bsky.social
Hey, friend. I want to get several fidgety objects for my casually destructive children for Yule. Have you "oops my adhd broke it" playtested yours? Can you recommend specific ones?

Anything to get all my seedlings out of the house 😂

The structure itself has quirky dimensions. It's a pentagon with each side slightly different lengths, but roughly 7.7ft long and almost 7ft tall (on the outside, gently vaulted ceiling inside).

Only two and a half sides really get direct sunlight, but you know how it is here. It'll probably stay pretty warm inside.

I'm not sure what I did with my "before" photos, but here's my gazebo-to-greenhouse project, with all but one wall finished (the last wall needs a doorframe first)

The gazebo wasn't quite even on any side, so adding supports and cutting polycarbonate sheets is a challenge.

The side of a hexagon shaped structure with clear corrugated polycarbonate sheets tacked up in two layers totaling about 7.75 feet by nearly 7 feet, attached to framing combined of old partially painted 4x4 beams and new horizontal 2x4 planks. Shown where two corners intersect, and the new fan overhead. Discarded boxes are inside the structure. There's no such thing as an ethical tech CEO.
But if they tell you they can't be bullied into doing the right thing, they're lying.

The instructor, who is older than me, for my kid's martial arts class said I look like his (dead?) mother in law and I'm just gonna stare at the middle distance for a while.

It's October, which is usually my most terrible month, and so this project is as much for me as for the people who will get poems in a couple months.

It's poetry season, which means I'm typing up 2-3 poems a day on my little old portable typewriter (a rem rand cadet from 1938).

I'm building a greenhouse by converting the old gazebo my house came with.
And I keep thinking about how much I enjoy recycling wood and materials to make something useful to me.
I don't need it to be perfect, just to do what I mean for it to do.
Perfection is for houses built by professionals.
