Just returned from 2 days in my home city, Liverpool, designed to show my partner Sarah around. It was interesting to view somewhere so familiar as a tourist and to photograph it as such. I would have liked to enter the Winter Open but as I live in North Wales, there's no way I can travel all the way to Ynyshir to hand in an entry. I don't understand why postal submissions are not accepted. It's not really "open", is it?

I have a few, too, but I'm not fond of wearing hats really. I'm happy to sport my bald cranium (typical male-pattern baldness). I only wear hats to protect it from the elements, especially the sun.

Being follically challenged myself, I sympathise. A hair-do is a thing of the past, and implements like combs and hair-dryers redundant.

Every time I come across this photo it completely stops me in my tracks. Crude oil supertanker Esso Hibernia under construction at Swan Hunter shipyard, Wallsend, during 1970. The scale and spectacle of this thing is incomprehensible. (📸 Harriet Berney)
