Good morning, new followers! I should probably introduce myself at some point. I post about books (both the content and the objects themselves), libraries, humanities, art, music, science, cooking, gardening, nature & pop culture. My interests are varied & passionate.

Also I’m very gay.
Y'ALL. THE 1980s HUNTERS.

I have complicated thoughts about Thanksgiving. The First Thanksgiving story is pretty much pure myth. It's weird that we have a federally mandated observance of what was historically a religious/cultural observance with no fixed date. Roast turkey can be so hit or miss. Families are complicated. 🧵

Pssst, hey! Yes you. The one suffering through an awful holiday just because: "well, they're my family, what else am I going to do, etc."

You can just not go. You can walk away. You don't have to endure people who don't respect you. You can find your people and build your own family and future.

Spent my Thanksgiving day watching the parade* and rolling up a new D&D character. So, you know. I'm thankful for that.

*Pro tip: the YouTube stream has less commentary and gives the marching bands the screen time they deserve. They worked hard to be there, gosh darn it!

As you’re preparing for your Thanksgiving meal, remember the skilled work it took to get that food to your grocery store.

Tell us your favorite Thanksgiving dish, and we can share some of what we know about the work behind the ingredients.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone except politicians who try to destroy libraries and public schools.

I hope their turkey is super dry today.

I appreciate the work @littlejusticeleaders is doing on Instagram to provide white settler parents with resources for talking to children about social injustice. Here is an example for engaging in discussion about Thanksgiving (and its myths).

I'm cooking for myself and only for myself tomorrow (thank goodness), which means I'm just using recipes from The Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen. It makes me very, very happy to learn that Sean Sherman has a new cookbook.
"I hope that people can have this opportunity to be lured in by this beautiful food and actually learn something and maybe, hopefully, develop some empathy where there might not have been."

I'm honestly surprised that with all this renewed interest in the Wizard of Oz that nobody's tried to do a thing with Ozma recently, but I guess studios just assume mainstream audiences are only familiar with things from the 1939 movie

Unpopular book opinion: the traditional Western codex (this thing: 📘) is not an inherently superior format.

There is a poem in Ocean Vuong's Night Sky with Exit Wounds that is so much more powerful in the ebook. It's entirely an accident of how the format handles footnotes, but it works oh, so well

Cats often wandered across early medieval manuscripts, sometimes leaving inky pawprints, as in a Croatian example. One Dutch monk even noted a cat had peed on his page, adding: “Cursed be that wretched cat.”

I played Chrono Cross before I'd played Chrono Trigger, so maybe it was just easier for me to judge it on its own merits, but it has always been my favorite of the two.
'Chrono Cross' was released on the PlayStation 26 years ago today in Japan.
