Good morning, new followers! I should probably introduce myself at some point. I post about books (both the content and the objects themselves), libraries, humanities, art, music, science, cooking, gardening, nature & pop culture. My interests are varied & passionate.

Also I’m very gay.
Cartoon drawing of a pastel rainbow calico cat leaning over a mug of hot coffee, tea, or cocoa with steam rising to one side. The mug is decorated with a rainbow and a sun with a smiling face. The cat looks frazzled and exhausted. At the bottom of the image are the words I’m very gay and I’m very tired. Image by TeeTurtle available as a T-shirt at teeturtle.com.

This week, we lost one of the world’s greatest advocates for people and nature. Even in her final days, Dr. Jane Goodall was urging us not to give up, and now her legacy lives on through the countless voices she inspired.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Get you a man that takes pictures of you the way Tab Hunter photographed Anthony Perkins

What I like best about this storyboard is that it clearly shows Elsa using her ice powers to add accents to her dress, rather than somehow using her ice powers to create a new dress with an entirely different neckline that also somehow causes her old dress to disintegrate.

My favourite Jane Goodall quotes....so many, so to the point, so wise. How different the world would be if enough people listened to her.
"People think hope is wishful thinking, and actually hope is about action." Quote from the Wiser Than Me podcast with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. "Only when our clever brain and our human heart work together in harmony can we achieve our true potential." Graphic by the Jane Goodall Institute of South Africa. "You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." Graphic by Ariana Huffington on Instagram.

Saw someone say, “Stop hoarding books, we don’t need paper books anyway” and I can’t express how misguided this is. Online libraries disappear, digital books can be altered, and with Big Tech seeking to destroy history and literacy, print media has never been more essential.

I'm gonna miss this place so damn much.
The corner of Brown's Race and Platt Street in Rochester, New York, on a crisp autumn day, September 30, 2025. The Kodak Tower stands tall and proud in the background. In the foreground, the trees are changing colors with leaves in rich shades of yellows, oranges, and browns.

I try very, very hard to stay positive on this site. Sometimes I just have to break down and say, "This is not fair. This is hurting people. This is not right."

My favorite small business tea shop just sent out a heartbreaking email about how their wares from Japan and Nepal have been seized, delayed, or lost by customs agents due to the tariff situation. It's infuriating and heartbreaking to see small businesses struggling due to arbitrary policy changes.

I wish everyone would stop acting like autism is a bad thing. Neurodiversity is like any other type of diversity: a beautiful, interesting, integral part of humanity.

#OtD 29 Sep 1909 the @IWW began their first free speech fight in Missoula, MT. Members spoke on the street in defiance of the law until arrested, followed by another, effectively filling the local jail. By Oct, free speech won and all charges dropped stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1013...

I can absolutely see Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant doing a museum heist movie. I'm pretty sure leopards are open to all kinds of mischief. Someone go back in time and make this film happen!

Look, the world is an absolute mess but we’re still growing and celebrating 1200 lb pumpkins. While there are still preposterously huge gourds, I believe there is still hope

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

I turned quote posts on for now. I might turn them off again at some point. Hope this helps!

One last vacation photo:
Exterior shot of the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. A thin three-story red brick building sits at the corner of an intersection in a residential neighborhood. Next to the museum is a chain link fence and a large banner that says " Future home of the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum Expansion ". A smaller sign advertises an upcoming event in early October, but the details of the event are not legible in the photograph.

Also the Paws on Parchment exhibit at the Walters Art Museum is charming. If y'all can make it to Baltimore before February, it's worth a visit.
Photograph of the manuscript La fleurs des histoires with inky paw prints clearly visible across the page, showing that the scribe's cat evidently walked across the parchment before the ink dried. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Close-up photo of the Beaupré Antiphonary (volume 1), a medieval liturgical manuscript on parchment showing part of a music score with marginalia of a seated figure playing the tug-the-yarn game with a little kitty cat Photo of a manuscript Book of Hours and Psalter with marginalia of a kitty cat standing on its hind legs playing a cymbal.

There are many things that I would not like to tell my past self from 2006, because they would only break his heart.

I would, however, like to tell him that one day he'll get to try the red velvet cake from the cake shop in Food Network's Ace of Cakes. It's a pretty darned good red velvet cake.
