I encounter this a lot, and it's just because so many people have grown up in an era of disposable goods, where they're encouraged to treat literally *everything* as consumable instead of repairable. The idea of maintaining things just doesn't occur to them. I don't fault them for not knowing.
been thinking about this a lot lately, how I regularly discover someone has never done some kind of important maintenance (usually involving filters: engine air, HVAC, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner) & learning not to be disgusted by them, but just that nobody ever told them you have to do these things
Good news for me. My home is not in immediate danger of burning down from an electrical fire, and the HVAC man didn't even have to clean the blower because I've been doing such a good job changing out the filter regularly every 4 weeks.

we were better off when people bowled leagues together. imagine, a regularly time every week to see your friends and chat, meet new people, and not think about much besides your score.
I think a big thing I struggle with, and something that is an important thing for people of my generation to attempt to understand, is separating toxic nostalgia from knowledge of the actual ways in which American life has gotten appreciably worse in my lifetime
it’s so weird to look around and realize like, tech and media are materially worse than a decade ago
