I think tomorrow I'm going to play The Beginner's Guide, Davey Wreden's lesser-known game between The Stanley Parable + Wanderstop.

It looks quite esoteric, but interesting.

I have it in my Steam library - not even sure how I got it! (Probably a game bundle somewhere.) So I might as well play it.

The Beginner's Guide is a narrative video game from Davey Wreden, the creator of The Stanley Parable. It lasts about an hour and a half and has no traditional mechanics, no goals or objectives. Instea...

I'd just like to give a nod to C418, game composer extraordinaire.

Beyond Minecraft's iconic soundtrack and Cookie Clicker's Steam release tunes, he says he put years into Wanderstop's music, and it shows.

Here's Wanderstop's full OST. Enjoy it! It's soothing and absolutely elevates the game.

Yeah, and there are kids who claim the Star Wars prequels are the best movies in the series.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, I guess!

Back in the 1990s when Space Quest V came out, my brother spent $50 of birthday money on it and we beat it in a single afternoon.

It was a disappointing way to spend $50, but we loved every minute of the game itself.

By contrast, I spent $20 on Dune II and we played it for months. We loved it too.

I am totally here right now for games that take under 10 hours and cost $20 or less. They suit me just fine.

It's a great way to be able to enjoy many games in a month without having to spend the time or money on a boring midgame or features I don't want or need.

Just rolled credits on Wanderstop. I recommend it just as strongly having finished it. It's dreamlike but also grounded; cozy and yet hard-edged; ambiguous and yet clear.

It's also tremendously funny and enjoyable with gorgeous music and art. Make this one a high priority to play this year!

So, I'm doing a business podcast for work and I thought, "why not devote some time to a gaming one, too?"

So tomorrow morning, I'll be posting up the first episode of The Great Game Guide, featuring theme music I wrote and your weekly dose of me talking about obscure games!

I just couldn't resist.

Oh no. This book I'm about to start reading has a preface AND an introduction that together go on for 37 pages

Padding, or essential? I'll skip 'em and find out if I have to flip back.

The further I get into Wanderstop, the more I wonder if one of the writers from Clickhole contributed to it.

The phrasings, the joke structures, the types of characters and the out of nowhere ideas all feel very Clickhole-like.

Which is good - I love Clickhole! One of my favorite humor sites

I endorse this position!

I've long said if I ever publish any of my fiction, I will have a policy under which derivative non-commercial works are authorized and individual low cost licensing for commercial derivative works is possible, whether that's creative commons or some other structure.
In an era where corporations are actively pushing for IP law to be bypassed entirely so they can regurgitate plagiarized material to sell back to the world, I'm increasingly of the opinion that making fangames, romhacks, etc the old-fashioned way is cool/punk/a minor act of resistance.

Here's a fun @ocremix.org track for a week where we could all use some heroes in our lives.

It's based on music from Sunset Riders - "Mr. Pink Poncho's Western Rock Band" by Naohisa Morota, remix by Dr. Manhattan

Don't be fooled by the title - Space Rogue has nothing to do with Rogue, but it is a great Elite-style space trading game that's a lot of fun to play even today!

You likely missed this interesting space adventure that isn’t quite as good as Elite, but which fuses several different styles of gameplay into a compelling whole.

One of the tells this holiday season was that Nintendo lowered the price at many retailers to $400 and still had trouble moving units. They vastly overestimated demand.

They should have done better pricing research before making the Switch 2 $500. It cooled enthusiasm for the console.

So my son's review on Kirby Air Riders for the Switch 2 is "I love it!"

He also finished the game and has unlocked most of the content in about 24 hours, just playing before and after school.

So, thank goodness I got it from the library! He's got three weeks before it's due back.

Man, do I love Incredible Crisis! It's such a unique and interesting game, backed by a one of a kind soundtrack by the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra!

If you've never played it, you should!

I've been playing deeper into Wanderstop tonight.

What a great game! It's beautiful and interesting and nonviolent, with great music and some wonderful humor.

Even my kids were into it, which is often a great sign!

It's $15 on Steam right now. Don't miss out!

Quoted for truth! Roblox is dangerous and if you are going to let your kids play it, you should definitely have some strong safeguards in place.

My kids are only allowed to play it in the living room or in a visible space - no phones!

And they're not allowed to chat with randos. Zero tolerance.

Prophecy: The Fall of Trinadon is a truly obscure PC game that definitely deserves to be played.

It's an action RPG in which you can talk your way out of trouble instead or murdering everything, and it has a vast continuous world to explore!

Three perfect games to get from the library for the low price of free!

If my kids like them enough, we can always buy them later.

Hooded Horse gets my vote for "game developers who deserve a seat at the adults table."

Writing "no AI art" into their contracts is the right move.

I'm not against AI, but I want it to be standard for publishers to disclose it was used to create assets and text.

If someone tells me their favorite movie is Harry Potter or Star Wars, The Matrix or The Avengers, I presume that's the sort of movie they love to experience and they're not interested in stepping outside that comfortable space.

But if they want to be part of a discussion about film, they need to.

I'm not a gaming snob. If you have played 5 video games in your life and they're your favorites and that's what you truly know and love, I support that!

But if you want to speak outside your narrow expertise, it behooves you to first learn what else is out there. It's a fun and worthwhile journey!
