It goes into that weird thing that genuine appreciation is somehow considered less intellectual than criticism but everybody is getting trained to be such a cynical unfeeling asshole nowadays that I find the smartest people often are the “hell yeah cool song/drawing/story/video” people

Ed wanders around behind him to take a closer look at the picture Lucius is sketching. “Fucking hell,” he pronounces, when he gets a good look at the extremely detailed closeup of Jim's dick that Lucius is lovingly shading. “That's…” he seems, briefly, speechless. His jaw, with its fetching regrowth of beard, works silently for a moment. Then: “That's <i>incredible</i>. You've really captured something.” “He's just recording what's there,” Jim chimes in lazily from their spot on Stede’s fancy chaise, reclined with their legs spread. “Yeah, no, I can see that. Jesus.” Lucius feels himself warm slightly to the man. He can appreciate anyone with good taste in art. “Did you want something?” he asks, without taking his eyes off his sketchbook. “Or are you just here for the show?”

I’m not actually anti-AI. I am against the situation we’re in, where a small # of massive companies are illegally/unethically training ever-larger models that require plundering the natural world.

I’m against a world where “AI psychosis” is a thing and where chatbots tell kids to kill themselves.

I’ve been in this industry for almost 20 years now. I’m not anti-tech. I am immensely skeptical of how heavily generative AI is being pushed, even in use cases where it’s ill-suited.

I’m also alarmed by the increasing number of stories about AI causing harm because there are insufficient guardrails
