* Over that period, immigrants created a cumulative fiscal surplus of $14.5 trillion in real 2024 US dollars, including $3.9 trillion in savings on interest on the debt.

* Without immigrants, the US government's public debt at all levels would be nearly twice its 2023 level.

It's not every day that I link to a CATO publication, but this one is truly important.

Some highlights:

* For each year from 1994 to 2023, the US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government.
Immigrants’ Recent Effects on Government Budgets: 1994–2023
Our analysis in this paper shows that immigrants generated a fiscal surplus of about $14.5 trillion from 1994 to 2023, that the average immigrant is much less costly than the average US-born American,...

They are looking for ways to solve the problem of low trust in the election that they themselves created by pushing a fictional conspiracy theory they began believing in because not believing in the conspiracy would cost them their political career.
Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., tells me Senate Republicans are having a "big meeting tomorrow" to discuss the path forward for SAVE Act. He predicts the Senate won't nuke the filibuster but adds that he's "willing to listen" to ideas on how to proceed.

I've been writing co-authored papers using Overleaf forever. Switching everyone away is such a pain. bit will look into this. Thanks!

Bob - What are the main benefits? There are costs to switch a typset.

The UK government is in crisis mode over Mandelson's appointment. In the USA, almost the entire cabinet had ties to Epstein, and there's far less pressure on Trump.
“.. He said he had no interactions with Epstein after 2005, yet we now know they were in business together,” Garcia said. “Lutnick must resign or be fired.”

Bit, Yes, I paid my own license because Penn has already group license for GitHub copilot. But if there will be pressure to adopt Claude , Penn will eventually facilitate that.

For sure there will be a growing expectation form donors, and perhaps co-authors, that projects move much faster. And they would. For most type of analysis that social scientists perform , Claude code already is up for the task.

Claude code will inevitably reduce dramatically the hiring of undergraduate RAs which will further increase the gap between what students are taught and how we conduct research.

The country is so messed up that many who love football will turn off at halftime to reduce Bad Bunny's rating, and many who couldn't care less about the game will tune in as an act of political solidarity.

My campaign faces its first test: qualifying for the ballot.

From my work on gerrymandering, I know that New Jersey politicians play rough. To beat their games, I need at least 1,000 signatures from Democrats and unaffiliated voters in the 12th District. To help, sign up at SamForNJ.org - or DM me!

Thanks, Luke !

I can't imagine how it feels to fully commit yourself to a political movement knowing deep down that your leader is truly an insufferable piece of shit.

Path breaking research is risky. Without tenure researchers will only play it safe and we will have fewer inventions and treatments.

No Tenure for Oklahoma.

Instead, faculty will be on "renewable contracts “tied to teaching effectiveness, student completion, job placement, and economic alignment.”

Tenure Will Be Eliminated at Most of Oklahoma’s Public Colleges, Governor Says
Gov. J. Kevin Stitt, a Republican, directed the state’s two-dozen regional universities and community colleges to phase out the practice. Existing faculty members will be grandfathered in.

I have been driving an EV for 7 years. I agree that people are worried too much about range-and but enough about charging infrastructure.

Also - Prosecuting someone who did break the law should not “up to the president “
Trump's constant degradation of female reporters is unsurprising but the press corps' collective decision to treat it as background noise is actually kind of sickening

exactly.

They really can't seem to find a langauge that neets the moment. Now "nationalization of election" may be problematic because it makes AG worried the federal government is hostile to THEIR work.

Wow. Thank you for stepping up. Good luck!

They can do that, or... "nationalize the election administration in 15 states."
Latinos were already feeling the pain of increased cost of living. Now, Republicans are warning the party needs to change course on immigration, focus on economic issues and start pouring money into competitive races — or risk getting stomped in November.
