A fantastic piece by @caseycrownhart.bsky.social + ‪@jamesmodonnell.bsky.social‬ at @technologyreview.com

On why the total lack of disclosure from tech companies means we have to rely on estimates - and even those conservative estimates are huge.

Imagine what the actual numbers are.........
We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard.
The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.

"I've not been using my brain as much....I’m worried about the impact of AI, but I’m not worried about the jobs, I’m worried about losing my mental sharpness." An excellent essay on the limits of AI coding. (Thanks to @mjcrockett.bsky.social for sending me this.) albertofortin.com/writing/codi...

I love this, especially "reframing testing as learning". In my Psychology 104 class, students have to create a study guide for each exam. Study guides are only questions they come up with. It's such a great way to study. Also teaching your dog or your stuffies like it was a class.

It's bonkers that in academic science we spend hours obsessing over the wording of a paper, but often only one person has seen the code that produced the results! 2/N

Researchers have been pointing out that these systems are probably “bags of heuristics” from the very beginning but pointing it out early literally cost some of them their jobs.

It’s kinda funny / harrowing that LLMs didn’t get smarter or less brute-force-y, we just got better graphics cards, and more comfortable with wasting obscene energy on what still remains the most overrated madlibs ever.

We Now Know How AI ‘Thinks’—and It’s Barely Thinking at All
The vast ‘brains’ of artificial intelligence models can memorize endless lists of rules. That’s useful, but not how humans solve problems.

Intuitive finding but important one for urban greening programmes:

“… adding greenspace in areas with the least nature yielded 1·4–1·7… times greater health benefits than uniform increases; adding greenspace to areas with the densest populations yielded 2·7 times greater health benefits”
