i am the parent of a child in pre-K and it is literally impossible for me to imagine speaking to my kid like this OR being so checked out as a parent that you don’t care about your kid‘s social skills
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

this reminds me of a progressive reformer who placed personal ads in newspapers, struck up exchanges with the women who answered, and—when he finally met them—measured their heads to try to ascertain why *they* were “abnormal”
