word! and trust that journalists will be the first to admit behind closed doors that yes some of it sucks; it sucks for them as they’re writing that stuff! i know many who would rather write about a cool, interesting, bold indie game than a live service title they don’t even like to play, but alas.

it’s an unfortunate system so much bigger than any one of us, or even a specific group of us :( i would love for the indie games i worked on in PR and work on now to get even more coverage, and i personally play more indies than anything nowadays. but like… i get it. it sucks for us but i get it

this is all i’ll say on the matter but i just intensely refuse to lay the many obstacles that come with marketing indie games at the feet of underpaid, over exploited, and hardworking people trying to do their best to get by

small outlets are largely the ones covering indie games!!! this has been the case since before i started in PR, it was the case during my time in PR, and it certainly remains the case now!!

so like, i do not begrudge any journalist who has to choose between getting a paycheck and covering indie games. yes, that is often literally the choice

the friends i had in journalism who are still in journalism? they’re largely not doing the work they want to, and that’s without factoring in their very real desire to cover indie games. they are barely holding onto their jobs and benefits — if they have any of the latter!

i get it, i do. i was press for seven years and now i market indie games for a living. we’re constantly fighting for attention against the giants, the algorithm that doesn’t want to surface our content like it used to, and an extremely oversaturated market

but this is not the way lmao

marketing indie games can be so hard, and i do not think antagonizing the press and not being empathetic to their extremely precarious circumstances makes it any easier
