Extraordinary. A Labour government is now demanding we include a climate-wrecking, democracy-defying corporate court system in our trade deal with the Gulf.

Given most companies don’t even care about it, this is virtue signalling to the most irresponsible capitalists.

This is HUGE

A court has ruled that TotalEnergies has misled consumers by presenting itself as a “major player in the energy transition”.

It is the first judgement in the world ruling an Oil & Gas major has misled the public by greenwashing its image.

15,000 scientists warn of socio-economic collapse. Yet nearly half of Brits think climate change won’t affect them.

This gulf in perception is why we’re staging the National Emergency Briefing on the #climate & #nature crisis.

Has your MP confirmed they’ll be there? #TimeToStepUp #NEB

UK MPs “overwhelmingly overestimate the time period humanity has left to bend the temperature curve”, according to new research published this week.

Is your MP one of these? They need to attend the National Emergency Briefing on 27 November

📢📢Bottom line: until GGR policy is decoupled from fossil and aviation interests, we’re not solving the problem — we’re subsidising it.

✈️✈️And aviation?

The Review suggests using GGRs to offset flight emissions. That’s a disastrous misuse.

GGRs should clean the atmosphere, not license more airport expansion.

🐘🐘Whitehead does call for less biomass imports BUT avoids elephant in room

Drax — the UK’s biggest single emitter — is being rebranded as a BECCS project, claiming to be “carbon negative” while burning imported forest biomass.

It’s climate greenwash, not GGR
bsky.app/profile/stop...
New research finds the Drax AI Data Centre would burn 2.5 MILLION tonnes of wood up to 2030, and then rising to 5 MILLION tonnes going forward

If approved, it means years more of Drax's dirty tree burning at the cost of forests, communities & our planet

A new data centre which will get its energy from Drax power station "could end up burning a tree every time it is used", opponents say.

🍃🍃Even worse, compressors and CO₂ storage for GGR could be powered by grid renewables.

🏭🏭But decades of fossil-industry lobbying have locked the UK into a model that keeps the clusters running on fossil gas.

That’s not climate leadership — it’s capture by incumbents

So while Whitehead calls for faster CCUS expansion, he never counts the carbon cost of that dependence — the upstream methane, the shipping emissions

... and the billions in public subsidies now landing on consumer bills.

Did you know the Govt have already allocated subsidies for over £59bn for carbon capture? See: tinyurl.com/DESNZ-SUBS

With @goodlawproject.bsky.social, I'm challenging a £10bn subsidy recently awarded to a new fossil fuel plant with carbon capture. Read more 👇

The Review treats GGRs as a standalone solution — whilst saying GGR depends on the UK CCS network, it treats the downsides as externalities

That network is not clean. Every UK cluster is built around fossil-fuel anchor projects burning methane-heavy LNG.

bsky.app/profile/dran...
CCS can't be a solution, when as planned by UK Govt it is front loaded with massive fossil fuel dependence on LNG - linked to very high methane emissions outside UK territory.

Starmer ignored this and has put £22bn into CCS against advice of scientists, see www.theguardian.com/environment/...

It’s meant to help the UK decarbonisation path — but it has some serious blind spots.

"Without GGRs we cannot meet net zero"

Also says GGR should compete with SAF to decarbonise aviation

📢 To decarbonize not only the power sector but also the steel sector, we are calling on banks to reduce financing for fossil fuels and to significantly increase financing for sustainable alternatives enabling a ratio of at least 6:1 to be achieved by 2030.
Reposted by Henry Adams
The steel sector is currently responsible for 11% of global CO2 emissions, mostly because of the use of metallurgical coal in its production.

Decarbonizing this sector is a priority, and the technologies to do so already exist. They require large amounts of electricity.
Reposted by Henry Adams
🦋 Butterfly effect: by aligning their support to the energy system with the needs of a net-zero trajectory, banks would help decarbonize more than just power supply.

Indeed, to happen at the needed pace, #steel decarbonization requires that a sufficient supply of sustainable power is available.
No fossil-free steel without sustainable power: banks must step up - Reclaim Finance
By failing to support the development of sufficient sustainable power supply, banks are jeopardizing the decarbonization of the steel sector as a whole.

- Glencore is currently pursuing 17 thermal and met coal mining expansions around the world.

- It has recently been found to downplay its climate impact in its reporting by considerably underestimating the methane emissions of the Hail Creek mine in Australia.

🔴 Barclays and Citi helped Glencore issue a €500 Mn bond yesterday.

The banks thus enable Glencore to pursue its coal expansion plans, despite all their social and environmental impacts.

📢 They must stop supporting companies with coal expansion plans like Glencore, including through bonds.
