Hey! I'm a climate journalist based in Los Angeles. I cover climate change and things that intersect with it — especially immigration, agriculture and Indigenous rights

I'm looking for my climate people over here 💚

In this investigation, @theguardian.com reporters @hilarybeaumont.bsky.social & @ninalakhani.bsky.social detail how fossil fuel lobbyists coordinated with state lawmakers to push legislation that criminalizes peaceful protest and boosts punishments. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024...

When I started reporting out a podcast on the Energy Transfer v. Greenpeace trial, accusing GP of fueling the Standing Rock movement, I had no idea the twists & turns the reporting would take. Here are some key documents I uncovered as I worked on SLAPP'd (THREAD)

SLAPP’d
The story of an Indigenous nation fighting for its water, an environmental nonprofit facing extinction, and an energy giant using the courts to punish protestors.

NEW: Last week, oil literally rained down on a Black town in rural Louisiana where 60% of folks live in poverty.

The company isn’t taking responsibility & the federal + state governments are saying residents have to clean it up themselves. capitalbnews.org/louisiana-oi...

At 6 am, volunteer Amanda Trebach was holding a protest sign when a group of masked agents violently detained her, according to Union del Barrio. They say she was thrown to the ground "pretty damn hard."

Agents alleged she "assaulted" a federal vehicle, but Union del Barrio says that's false.

NEW: Federal agents arrested a Union del Barrio volunteer/US citizen this morning while she was patrolling Terminal Island monitoring ICE activity

I recently followed Union del Barrio volunteers on patrol at Terminal Island:

A recent study finds that enhanced geothermal, with policy support, could become cost competitive by 2030. But this 24/7 carbon-free electricity source is being held back due to new Foreign Entity Of Concern limits on tax credits & Trump's deep cuts at the Loan Program Office & other DOE programs.

Respect to you for taking this on as a freelancer, and I hope your story has some impact. I wish I could see this film, I would probably cry too.

Geothermal is one of the most promising clean energy sources in the US, providing 24/7 renewable power that could meet rising demand from AI datacentres

But former DOE officials are alarmed that Trump is fumbling it’s potential:

SCOOP from me: Trump's AI action plan released last week makes a specific set of recommendations around loosening Clean Water Act permits for data centers — recommendations mirrored in letters sent to the administration by Big Tech lobbyists earlier this year:
Big Tech Asked for Looser Clean Water Act Permitting. Trump Wants to Give It to Them
New AI regulations suggested by the White House mirror changes to environmental permitting suggested by Meta and a lobbying group representing firms like Google and Amazon Web Services.

My new massive piece on the Energy Transfer v. Greenpeace trial includes never-reported details of the settlement ET offered GP. It would have thrown the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe under the bus. For @grist.org and @drilledmedia.bsky.social

Maybe you heard how Greenpeace lost a $666 million lawsuit blaming the nonprofit for the Standing Rock movement, the fight to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline? Today we launch ep1 of SLAPP'd, a podcast that explores the question: How the hell did this happen? (reported by me!)

A new generation of weather forecasters is live-streaming tornadoes and hurricanes to millions of YouTube subscribers - but you won’t hear them talk about climate change:

“If I were to be direct with it, we would just lose 40 percent of our audience immediately.”

Storm streamers are using radars and AI robots to track extreme weather for millions of YouTube subscribers, in some cases issuing alerts faster than the National Weather Service.

I see what you’re saying, but also the storm streamers rely on the NWS/NOAA too - there is no replacement for the radar, weather balloons, planes flying into hurricanes, scientists, etc. Everything can be politicized though…
