What’s a software product that got significantly better at its core value proposition, over time, while avoiding complexity and bloat caused by adding ways to serve a larger market?

Startup idea: solve the problem of Excel thinking everything’s a date. Make a spreadsheet that’s completely normal, except that dates are only ever in an ISO 8601 date format, and anything else is never interpreted as a date.

If only there were a software product development discipline that focused on maximising meaningful impact 😅
This is something I have tried to teach management at every job I've had when I wrote code; I sympathize with the need for metrics but this is a hard problem to solve

Now that I'm in management myself I am working hard to find meaningful metrics for my team and the value they deliver.
Trying to measure coding productivity is, and always will be, a fool's errand.

Why? Because I can go for a walk then take a shower and have an idea, then write a single line of code that fixes everything I was working on.

Immense productivity, but by most metrics I didn't do anything at all.

Dear readers, I would like you to know that:

1. I wrote a four-part series about my supermarket shopping list
2. I’ll publish the first part on my blog tomorrow
3. I’m not sorry 😅

Why do so many testers think they aren’t enough? That they should be ashamed of their role? That they should be called something different in order to get the respect they desire and deserve?

Well, I can venture a guess!

Startup idea: solve the (taboo) problem of source attribution in legal contracts. For example, use stylometry and similar natural language analysis to trace the source of specific contract clauses 😈 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stylome...

💡 Saturday tip: I have just used a dental soft pick to clean the compacted fluff from my phone’s charging socket, with damaging the connectors. Now it reliably starts charging when I plug it in ⚡️

People in companies are allowed to benefit from and enjoy hanging out together, even after a project no longer needs it. I suppose it can be called a ‘book club’ or something if it needs legitimacy 💡
I've had a monthly meeting for a project basically since I started at Igalia, and we basically reached a point in the project it doesn't make sense to sync monthly anymore and I am kind of sad 🥲

What’s the third binary number *called* (0, 1, 10, …)? How do you pronounce it?

Is it ‘three’, because we name the natural numbers as concepts, separate from their representations in base-10 or base-2?

Is it ‘ten’, because number names assume base-10, and there is no number ‘three’ in base-2?

Startup idea: solve the problem of young professionals who live with their parents while saving to buy a house, and who buy ‘too many’ books.

Rent out 40-foot containers kitted out as cosy libraries: wall-to-wall book cases, wood panelling, armchair, reading light, rug. Book storage to escape to.
