Books, classical music, prone to hyperbole. Just moved back to Minneapolis after 22 years in DC and I’m loving it. Someone assumed I was straight, so here’s this:🏳️‍🌈.

I mainly listened to CDs in 2025 so the Spotify results are a little funky, but I’m guessing there is no one else on the planet with this as their top song for the year.

Minneapolis Police Chief O'Hara notes the MPD will not work with federal agents & says "In moments like this, I know how real the fear is in our community. People are going to want to speak out, protest, & exercise their 1st Amendment rights. We will absolutely defend people's right to do just that"

I know many things in the world suck right now, but I'm delighted to report generalized personal joy.

Same thing for classical music recordings. A conductor (John Wilson maybe?) once tweeted (in the less bad old days) that streaming won't pay for a cup of coffee but even modest CD sales can fund a new recording.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I think the novella Train Dreams by Denis Johnson is a masterpiece, but I don’t think I want to see it on the screen.

Not one, but TWO Coleridge-Taylor discs released today! One featuring the orchestral works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor; the other, nearly all premiere recordings of Avril Coleridge-Taylor's orchestral works. Check them out! You won't be disappointed.

I fucking hate Arizona. Beautiful weather and not one single window in this VRBO has a screen. Because we must be pickled in AC 12 months a year. This is why we are all going to die.

Totally worth it just for the Arnold dances, but then Nielsen 5...I've listened to it dozens of times on CD, but my God, in person that has to be one of the most powerful pieces I've ever heard. And the audience was blessedly silent in the quietest moments of the first movement.
I flew from Minneapolis to Calgary for 8 minutes of Malcolm ARNOLD with the @calgaryphil.bsky.social. I guess I’ll stay for the DVOŘÁK and NIELSEN. (I wish we got to hear this organ tonight as well.)

I think there is a reason all eight Slavonic Dances aren’t often programmed in one concert. It’s like eating a half gallon of ice cream in one sitting, seems delicious at first but by the end you’re wondering why you did it.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a classical concert where they allowed people to record video during the performance. Can’t say I’m a fan.
