In food history, we notice how super-refined foods--gelatin, vienna sausage, white bread--lose class and become horrifying once they become industrialized. Suddenly, fingermarks in bread dough demonstrate skill, not clumsiness.

Post-chatGPT, I'm feeling this about writing. Smoothness feels gross.

Taylor Swift is bad and I will be vindicated in my eternal dislike of her in due course

An important (global) public service announcement from Ed Miliband on the day that renewables have over taken coal as the largest source of electricity.

"Clean energy, it's happening and it's the future."

don't blame me I studied social policy (and enjoyed it!)

Nothing original to add, but studying English at A Level was one of the best things I ever did for my critical thinking capabilities and helped me better understand life in general. I still find myself coming back to texts I studied fondly

I've started asking people if they can't afford headphones. It sometimes gets them to at least turn it down

Someone has written a critique on systems thinking recently - as a public post and not an academic article. I'm sure I scrolled past on LinkedIn and made a mental bookmark - thought it was Geoff Mulgan but apparently not. Anyone know what I'm talking about? 🤪🫠

ha I'm right on the edge of zone 2 so most of them are at least an hour for me. just a nice alternative to laps round the local park, especially in the evenings!

You can just walk here but you might also get a massive blister and have to hobble around campus the next day

YouGov asked me a question about BOGOF deals on sugary products, then immediately hit me with this:

Working from home a lot at the mo and really trying to hit my 10,000 steps. you can just walk here!

I think it's nice to have aspirations - whatever New Labour said about our values as a country stuck with me as a kid. Plus, it's not as if the right don't make liberal use of nostalgia!

That's not really a flex

you can also just... walk to Buckingham Palace whenever you have a day off. technically possible from anywhere in the country not separated by water

Basically this - were things better or were you just a child with no responsibilities and a limited understanding of wider society
beijingpalmer.bsky.social
remember when you were a CHILD? wasn't life BETTER then? now it's all SCARY.

Also why you should take any "things were better in the past" sentiment with a pinch of salt. Maybe people were just younger with a bit more vim

Life satisfaction mostly declines with age. Previous findings (esp. the famous U-shaped age-SWB trajectory) were artifacts of misspecified models. doi.org/10.1093/esr/...

Maintenance grant was a lifeline for me when my family circumstances changed - glad to see them coming back instead of more debt
hetanshah.bsky.social
Pleased to see the return of maintenance grants. Sorry they won’t probably cover most of humanities & social sciences (although let’s see). But most of all intrigued as to how they will manage a very complex funding stream. If fewer international students in a given year does that mean fewer grants?

Bridget Phillipson says poorest students will get maintenance grants for some courses, funded by international student levy - www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...

my takeaway from climate week nyc is that "climate storytelling" is a little too much "we must reimagine our deepest souls in relationship to mother nature and the moral abyss of the polycrisis into which we must now stare" and not enough "ok but get a heat pump"

never had a matcha latte before this morning, actually quite nice - have heard some places make them too hot which gives it a fishy taste which is what put me off for so long

nice thing about London: if you wake up early on a Sunday morning you can just walk to Monument
