Crunchyroll is destroying its subtitles for no good reason
daiz.moe/crunchyroll-...

A ton of research and effort went into this one. This is the article to read to get to the bottom of Crunchyroll's subtitle changes!

With the Fall 2025 anime season, Crunchyroll demonstrates zero respect for anime as a medium as the presentation quality of its subtitles reach an all-time low.

This is particularly baffling because one of the primary reasons to be using Sony's Crunchyroll instead of "general" video streaming sites is that Crunchyroll *does* have the better, properly typeset subtitles. If Crunchyroll stops providing those, what is the point of using Crunchyroll at all?

still haven't recovered from seeing the csm movie. incredible work of art
Every week that goes by I'm in awe of Ono's ability to convince me that someone might have a chance besides Himari. The series is literally named after her and the mc but every chapter I ask myself but what if she doesn't win.

ZUN going on a game's livestream just to pull the "She Would Not Fucking Say That" card multiple times is absolutely hilarious. King shit
ZUN : I'm not sure about Nue wearing cool clothes, It's not very Unidentified.
cs market crash is pretty funny

The whole elephant in the room wrt localization is that “adequate and cheap” is good enough for 90% of companies, and they really don’t care about what the audience outside of Japan gets as long as they make some profit
As the threat of AI translations and subtitles keeps rising, at some point we need to have the conversation about how the push for these are coming more from JP producers and publishers rather than western ones because the reality is Japan generally doesn't care that much about localization quality
Friends, #weebwednesday is upon us once again! You know the drill - quote-post with your weebiest hot takes, nothing racist, nothing intentionally inflammatory, have fun with it ♥
The funniest thing to me was seeing how many of my fellow sysads started off doing software dev and then realized they hated it but still liked computers and switched to that instead.

I'm not worried about protein powder because as an electronics hobbyist I've already decided that lead poisoning isn't real

From my book about #Undertale 's official English-to-Japanese translation

I'd like to expand on this for an article on my site, so if you have any examples of "imprinting" situations in fandoms, please let me know

Some quick examples include FF4, FF6, Trails in the Sky, what else?

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.
I don't think bullying is justified either, and I've outlined what I think is kind of the split in understanding here that's led to most of the tension in this discussion here. bsky.app/profile/hora...
I get that, and I'm more than willing to admit there's egg on my face here. It's easy to walk into a conversation falsely assuming a shared understanding over key terms and it seems that's what I've done here. In a sense the classic case of commenting before finishing the video.
What does that entail? What does a refutation of core "magic" look like? I'm not gonna lie to you I don't know. This isn't my gate to keep. Frankly I think it's probably still too early to determine the long term affect of this. I don't know that there's a lot of people fully rejecting UW for UB yet
Not a crime I'm not gonna flame you for it, but a refutation of that history or worse doubling down in outright bigotry merits the keeping of the gate. To bring it back to MTG I suppose this would be something like introducing cool aspects of other historically great sets.
If we're keeping the gate we must allow entry as well. If we don't allow people to try and enter we're no longer a gate just a wall. In my view it's only once these things are being rejected that entry must be barred. Not immediately knowing the history of queer works in anime and manga?
In much of my discussion about gatekeeping generally and with others it's with the understanding that I don't mean 90s and 00s era bullying to achieve a goal. In my case it'd be something likely correcting misinfo about some animanga issue. (e.g. Ghost Stories dub)

Not like super strongly, I'm being quite open that MTG is not where most of my passion lies, but I can empathize with the original commenter. Tangentially speaking, MTG doing so much UB is actually driving me away. It was never my main game but what I liked *was* the cool fantasy and magic.
But also you're doing the same thing again where it's being framed that growth is inherently good. I'm not saying it's inherently bad, I think there are good ways to expand ease of access to something, but yes I do align with the view that sacrificing UB would be worth it to "preserve" magic.
Is the whole point of this not that the original commenter thinks UB is not magic and they shouldn't make it because it erodes what they view as fundamental to the culture around it they grew with? I stated in my original reply that I don't wholly agree with them, I wouldn't actually bully a newbie.
I think it's acceptable to lose potential participants who would've one day learned to appreciate the fundamental essence of subculture in order to preserve it. Presumably you and elk don't. I'm not gonna piss my pants about it, MTG isn't my main game I don't care as much as the original commenter.
"It's cool to make friends!"
Not actually an argument for why something being more popular is good. You can drop my references to nazism, both of which were referring to anime's issues with it btw, and the crux remains the same. This is a matter of differing core views.
I haven't heard a particularly compelling reason for why mass popularity is good besides "But more people will like it". Why is that good? A lot more people like frieren now, a whole hell of a lot of them are fascist. Why is it being more popular good?
