6 month update for anyone who cares: both desks are now covered in junk, and I am currently using neither
hylandka.bsky.social
I now have two desks--one for handwriting/reading and one for my computer monitor.

This will obviously fix all my problems

The other day I drew a subway-style map for The Hobbit, and it was very well received. Some of you asked if I could do one for LoTR, so I have!

Forgive the eel watermark; I'm working on making these something you can buy, if you like.
Subway style map to go with The Lord of the Rings, showing the different pathways of various parties throughout the book. The title reads: "Lord of the Rings Transit Map: One Does Not Simply Walk Ino Mordor When One Can Ride." The map takes up the middle part of the page, and there are two keys. The one on the left is titles "Standard Service Lines, and has color keys matched to the subway lines on the map. Lines are named:
"Shire-Bree Commuter Line
Old Forrest Crescent
Wildland Scenic Line
Fellowship Line
Gollum / Sméagol Line
Uruk Hai Express
Three Hunters Line
Fangorn Slow Service
Rohan to Gondor Business Line
Black Ships Ferry Service
Oliphant Direct Line
Army of the West Line
Gandalf Express

A smaller key on the right side of the map is labeled: "Limited Service Lines" and has color keys matched to the following names lines:
"Eagle Express
Paths of the Dead Line
Nazgûl Search & Resuce
Valinor Ltd."

A note at the bottom reads:
"* Mount Doom station only accepts Rings of Power in payment. Plan accordingly."

I'm used to running into the sub vs. dub debate on the internet, but it is especially cool to see it pop up in academic bluesky rather than an anime subreddit

❓Why do the Nordics & Dutch speak English so much better than the Germans, Italians & French?

As someone who'd love to test this--I feel like "More of what?" is the sticky part underlying this question. It seems to me like these two tasks lend themselves to different outcomes, and those outcomes may be more or less preferred depending on what one sees as the aims of education

Female academics are much more affected by the birth of a child than are male academics.

Academic mothers are much more likely to...

◾temporarily leave the labor force

◾and, if they return, shift away from tenure-track positions.

🤔 What kind of Pre-K experience sets students up for long-term success?

Our new working paper offers important new evidence to help answer this question!

And 🧵👇
A screenshot of the abstract of the working paper Figure 1: School Enrollment Pathways for Lottery Winners and Control Group Students through 8th Grade. This figure represents school enrollment pathways across different school types (BPS, BPS Exam School, non-BPS district school, charter school, and other) for both lottery winners and the control group. The thickness of the lines represents the percentage of lottery winners/control group students that are enrolled in each type of school. Blue lines show the pathways taken by lottery winners, and BPS-specific school categories are highlighted in the light blue boxes. BPS = Boston Public Schools.

Just finished watching #Andor. Great series. I think my favorite part was when Luthen and Cassian solved those really hard math problems together

Wow!

Each $1 spent on Universal Pre-Kindergarten generates between $3-$20 dollars in aggregate earnings.

That's enough to offset the costs of Universal Pre-Kindergarten through higher tax revenues.

🧵 But since Head Start's inception, there have been disagreements about whether or not the program "works." So let's review what we know from rigorous research on Head Start's effectiveness, and let's start with what it means for the program to work. 🧵 1/n
