Networking/emailing professors can't hurt (no guarantee it'll help, either!): but given how uncertain this year is, extra info could help (both for applicant and school). Shepherd them to programs that would be good fits in your professional experience. Help them write/communicate/think coherently!

It’s a pretty good bucket, but I can tell you that after you eat about 40 of them you don’t feel very good.

Great visit out to Oxford for the Faraday Discussion on Polymerisation/Depolymerisation! Thanks to Antoine and Charlotte for the invitation to contribute a paper and talk (and get grilled for an hour on said paper/talk)!

2 of my favorite things: Ti and LMCTs!

Yeah. Sorry--my extreme facetiousness didn't come across in the text. 😆 Such a joke!

Yeah. My shrug emoji was doing some heavy lifting there--safe to say this list uh... doesn't quite accurately capture important forums. The gamification of publishing continues apace!

Fascinating. As a practicing academic chemist virtually zero of these top journals make it into my regular reading list. We are a diverse lot I guess! 🤷

yes, Jeff, it totally sucks. agreed!

oof. I get lots of spam emails from whatever this revvitysignals thing is and wow do I delete them quickly.

chemdraw updated on me (23.1.2) and what the actual F is this new logo. Like am I at a suburban chopped salad fast casual joint or did my benzene just roll around too much so that the corners eroded off or...
terrible new chemdraw logo with rounded edges on a 6 membered ring??

2 new Tonks Group articles out this week in my favorite journal Organometallics: a dive into Ti-catalyzed hydrohydrazination catalyst structures, and expanding an approach for carbonylative polymerizations! Congrats to Partha, Ryan, and Janaya! doi.org/10.1021/acs.... pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....
Reaction scheme showing the hydrohydrazination of alkynes with varying Ti catalyst structures Reaction scheme showing a 2-step carbonylation-then-polycondensation route to polyesters from alkenols

Congrats! That’s big news in these crazy times.

A long-overdue follow-up (original in 2016) on Ti-catalyzed carboamination: now selective, thanks to Michael and a Ti-iodide catalyst! Out in ACS Catal today. This is a neat one in that selectivity may emerge from a post-catalytic rearrangement of the kinetic product. doi.org/10.1021/acsc...
alkynes undergo Ti-catalyzed carboamination by alkenes/diazenes to selectively yield unsaturated imines through rearrangement of a kinetically formed cyclopropylimine

Congrats to Dr. Ryan Anderson, who defended his PhD yesterday! Ryan's work into sustainable polymers was funded through the generous support from the MN Corn Research and Promotion Council. He's now off to Dow Chemical to continue these efforts!

I think you can, but (for example) each journal email I get takes me to a different portal with a different (non-ORCID) login. You’re right that ORCID solves that, but in that case they should make it clearer/default!
ianatonks.bsky.social
RSC is a particular pain in my ass for this… do all the journals technically have different portals?
