Here’s a drawing of it - fun to imagine the warf there too. It must have been teeming w life most days. There was also a fairly substantial village next to the fort, making it a busy and significant trading hub for the people in the area.

Obviously the drought has been awful in New England, but the lake is low enough to reveal the French warf at Crown Pt aka Saint-Frédéric circa 1734. Thrilling stuff for a nerd like myself

From the diary of Janet Schaw, leaving North Carolina for Britain on the verge of revolution, 1775 - “an unhappy land, for which my heart bleeds in pity. Little does it signify to you, who are the conquered or who the victorious; you are devoted to ruin, whoever succeeds.”

Just got this in the mail from my old man - shot 248 years ago to the day! How’s that for a weird coincidence?

Such a good book and the fallout of that disaster, so to speak, is endlessly interesting and complicated.

On this day in 1813, the Battle of the Thames was fought near present-day Chatham-Kent, Ontario. The battle was a defeat for the British, who lost control of the Western District of Upper Canada. Indigenous leader Tecumseh was killed in the battle.
A historical illustration depicting a battle scene in a wooded area. Soldiers in gray uniforms and red-coated figures are engaged in combat, with some wielding muskets and others on horseback. Several fallen figures lie on the ground, and a central figure on a white horse appears to be leading the charge. Trees with autumn foliage and a distant landscape with more troops are visible in the background.
